How to use a Nano-SIM in a Micro-SIM phone?

You can probably fabricate an adapter. Get an old plastic card (loyalty card, bank card etc, anything thats a similar thickness as a SIM.) Cut it to size, cut the middle out to fit the smaller SIM, bit of tape on the side without the contacts to hold the SIM in place

What's wrong with using an adapter? Your question is basically "if I don't use the thing which makes it work then can I still do it?".

You can make yourself an adapter if you really want but you're probably better just going into a phone shop tomorrow and asking them for a spare adapter/outside of the full size simcard from the latest customer to take a simcard.

Adapters can sometimes break the pins on the sim contact thing

Not worth the hassle, get a replacement sim from your provider, 3 for example do it free (for you contract)

I use a nano sim in my micro sim backup phone without an adapter. All the way to the right and not all the way in and never had an issue

You could always order a pay as you go sim from 3, remove the micro-nano sim cutout from the 3 sim and use it with your own nano sim.

Doing this would make you a bad person :p

Like others have said you may be able to do it without an adapter but it depends how the sim card is held in place
