I would like to wake my desktop pc(win7) up from sleep when accessing the shared files from my laptop.(winxp)

Ive searched on the net, but I cant figger it out, Ive changed the bios to wake up on lan and changed it in windows aswell, But still my desktop wont wake up from sleep when trying to access its files from laptop?:(

Ive heard and messed about with magic packet, but didnt get anyware.. do I need software on both desktop and laptop for the magic packet thing to work?

You could RDP in to it and put it to sleep from there.

That assumes that you've got a version of Windows that supports RDP, or you’re going to install third-party remote access software.

Much easier to create a .cmd file containing the parameterised shutdown command and then create a shortcut to it.

Where's the authentication with this cmd file? I thought shutdown -i would only work in domain environments.
