If I was releasing a product and had to do demographic targeting, what sort of features would be expect?

I understand you'd be wanting to talk about ages and genders etc, but anything in particular?

thanks

The obvious ones are targeting by age and gender, for example 18-25 age group, or Males aged 25-35 and so on.

You would then target specific regions or areas where those groups are likely to either frequent or view, such as specific TV channels like Bravo or Football grounds and so on. It is no good targeting a known area of high under 50 residence to target retirement homes for example.

You need to decide who would be the likely group who would buy such a product, so targeting specific income groups and occupations, not much point targeting a new exclusive nightclub to the over 60's or a luxury sports car to low income groups for example.

You also need to consider the relevancy of the advertising to the target audience, does it tap into the current fashions and movements within your target audience. Use of language and wording is paramount, the use of digital formats also, not much point targeting a group who spend all their time on the internet by advertising in the Times for example.

Use of keywords to push your advertisement or brand link up the search engine logarithms and again wording designed to attract the demographic you are targeting.

That should get you started.

Thanks, I owe you a beer. Got my presentation in 20 mins so will jam most of that into it and try and make it relevant to our product. Really appreciate that :)

One last question. Is segmentation come under demographics? Eg geographical and behavioural segmentation? Presentation got pushed back an hour :D

Segmentation of markets is primary to targeting certain demographic within a customer base. For example it recognises that the customer base is diverse and not all the same so it narrows the target by identifying those markets within the demographic, so yes I would say so.

Give this a read and you will see how it works.

Then picture it jack knifing and coming back at me tomorrow.....

(I got away with it last time due to it me changing my name to be the last one and it getting pushed back).

Got it in 7 hours time though. :/

Haha, sorry for getting all emo, I'm just absolutely tired. Lots of things going on in my life, just goes over the brim occasionally.

I'll cope with my degree, I'm half way through it, I just need a good slap.
