How unique is your browser?

I’m unique because my many fonts reveal at least 19.33 bits of identifying information and I thought it was unique because of my favourites. ;)

Surely you can just track someone with their IP address, why do they need a "browser fingerprint"?

Very few people actually have a static IP address (edit: moreover, multiple people often share the same IP address but use separate computers), so that's not very useful. With this they can just take a hash of the 'likely to be unique' pieces of data from your browser and essentially use it as an identity tag. This is useful in the case of most people who download their browser, the plugins they want and never touch their browser again.
