How well did/would you clean a flat before moving out?

Definitely depends on who's managing your place - an agent or a landlord? From my experience with most landlords, as long as you give it a proper hoover and dust and let them know of any issues they're usually OK. With agents they tend to be fussier.

I rented a furnished flat, cleaned it top to bottom, touched up paint, it looked pukka when I left. landlord showed up, flipped the mattress over and showed me a fag burn - I strongly denied it, he said that I didn't tick the box from the initial inspection to say there was a fag burn on the mattress. He kept the deposit.

should have fought it a new matters does not cost an entire deposit.

We cleaned ours to the point where it was probably cleaner than when we moved in, touched up any paint marks on the walls, cleaned the over, etc landlord appreciated it and we got our full deposit back.

When I left mine, I...

- Hoovered throughout
- Wiped down all kitchen surfaces
- Did the oven with some of that viscious foam spray (spray it, leave 30min, wipe off with gloves)
- Cleaned bathroom stuff
- Wiped down any obvious marks on walls/cupboards etc.

That was it really. Letting agent was really pleased when I had my final inspection.

Read your lease. Quite often they have set charges for oven cleaning, fridge cleaning etc that can be quite steep and make you think twice about doing a half arsed job. Landlords and agents just want it really clean ready for the next occupants who might conceivably be moving in a few hours after you have handed in the keys. You would want it to be clean if it were you moving in and it's no different for your successors.
