How well do Pentium 4's throttle?

Got a mate who managed to bend the pins on his Pentium 4 2.53ghz so needed a replacement. Pointed him to one from the bay which he bought for £20.

Now he's saying that doesn't work but it did at first. Said it got to windows load up screen and then crashed. Thing is he didn't have any thermal compound. No big deal I thought as the P4 would have throttled back before heat damage occured right?

Now I've discovered he actually ran it without any heatsink/fan on at all

Now it doesn't work and he wants the guy to replace it.

So question is how much chance is there he broke the P4 himself? or could it have been damaged before?

That's like running a car with no oil, then wondering why the engine siezed? Surely he has no leg to stand on?

I recall seeing how long (read a matter of seconds) an Athlon lasted with no hsf on, the vid showed a load of smoke pretty much straight away..

Don't group Athlons into one, i've tested A64s without sinks to see what'd happen and not one of em smoked, cut off quite quickly. Have also tested an old 1500+ a few years ago on a board with the proper circuitry and it cut out pretty quick without damaging a thing.

Hence me saying Athlon and not AMD ;)

Yes, any decent mobo will immediatley switch off when the cpu temp reaches a certain threshold.

Should've been specific and said Thunderbirds and Durons (spitfire, not sure about Morgan and above in regards to the diode) in general and Xps without supporting motherboards :p

Its to do with the Diode built in to the palomino and above as well, when used with a mobo with supporting circuitry, Thunderbirds would smoke in like 3 secs flat and even the best mobo would'nt react in time.

When Toms hardware guide did a series of tests on cpu's the P4's throttled, lagged shut down and lived. so it *should* be okay :)

although the durons popped lol

Yea i remember that one. However, i've known them to die off early when the clients fan got extremely clogged or stopped working. While the thermal protection works, i'd say long term exposure to running without the sink would kill it eventually. Seeing as it did work for sometime it obviously was not DOA and would more than likely be working fine had he used a heatsink, theres no way i know of to get a cpu partially working for a short time to make a sale knowing it'll break down soon, cpus and cars differ that way :D I'd say your friend needs to just cut his losses and gain something from the experience as he 100% seems at fault for its death.
