I've tried on more than one occasion to get into Vagrant Story, and each time it's bored me senseless.
I can't help but feel I'm missing something (as you say, people still play it and a mate of mine loves it), but it just never managed to grab me in any way at all.
As for FFVII, playing it on a PSP is probably the way to go. I'll love that game until I die, but it sure does look ugly on a large TV these days
