How well paid are trade careers in the UK in 2024?

Eletrician seems best to me at least out of those options. The big bonus with some trades is the ability to then go work for yourself. A old friend of mine left school became a sparky works for himself seems to be doing well. Almost makes me think why did I bother with uni?

Because everyone else did or told you to?

Its becoming apparent now, going to uni is a big financial debt. Unless you are going to be an doctor etc. You walk out with a piece of paper, big debt and still struggle to ge a job because everyone has an degree now. End up working in a low paid job, you could have gotten without a degree.

Self study is the way to go, as for getting a trade. Uni wont help you there, you need to be hands-on and getting your hands dirty.

100%.

I never went to uni as I had had enough of education by the time I was 18, I don't regret it at all.

As you say, it has it's place, life ambition to be a Doctor? Then of course it makes sense.

Same, I didn't got to uni either because I knew I wanted to be in IT. I always did it as an hobby so no need to go to uni.

20 years on now as an Senior IT Systems Engineer, not having an degree hasn't stopped my career progression.

The typical, everyone pretty much told me to and then you see everyone else doing it, and just do anything, I did Biology and it's like.... what do you even do with that? graduate roles I suppose but never managed to get one in that area. That sort of topic area they are in very short supply. A lot of people also go on to do masters etc but I had absolutely no desire.

The bottom line is the law considers you an adult at 18, but the reality is with a normal childhood where you weren't forced to grow up fast, you are still pretty much mentally a child making potentially huge life changing decisions that have consequences for the rest of your life.

I'd rather have gone to uni in my early 30's or late 20's if anything. The only lucky part is I took out I believe its a plan 1 loan? and my debt was only 9k as I lived at home. If I had lived away it would have been waaaaaay higher.
