I have my main pc downstairs and a media pc in my bedroom. I am running out of storage on my media pc and would like to use some of the hard drive space on my main pc. I would like a gigabit connection going from the media pc to the main one. However I don't have a gigabit router and don't want to buy one at the moment. I was thinking of using a crossover lan cable to go between my pc and my htpc. My mobo has two lan connections. I was wondering if this could be setup to run a cable directly to my media pc. It also has 1000Mbps.

If cost wasn't an issue at the moment, I'd have the whole house linked upto a gigabit 20TB server in the loft. However my bank balance tells me I'll have to make do with an 8 quid GB lan cable.

So can I use my other lan connection on my mobo to do this?

Yes you can. I've got a similar setup in my house. You just need to make sure that you use fixed ip adressing on the lan port you are connecting with. Something like 192.168.1.25 on your pc and 192.168.1.26 on your media pc. Ensure they are both on the same workgroup also and that you have media sharing enabled both ways.

Cool. It's networked at the moment via the router though and limited to 54Mbps. Be nice to see 1000Mbps.

just buy a gigabit switch like this one and then plug it into your router, then use your existing cabling that currently plugs into your router to go in to the switch. hey presto expandable gigabit network without having to worry about running new lengths of cable up stairs, or messing around with ip addresses either

That was an option but then I would have to run two seperate gigabit cables. My router is in seperate rooms from both my main pc and my htpc. So two cables and a switch shoots up the price.

I'm on a major budget at the moment.

OK so how are your pc and your htpc currently connected to your router ?

i took the way you described it to mean you already had a cable running from the router to the htpc and another running to your main pc, if this is the case you shouldn't need to replace those.

If you alreday have Cat 5 / 6 cables running to your PC & HTPC from the router then no new cables will be needed except for a cable between the switch box offered above and your router for internet connection

ah I see, now that explains why you'd need new cables.
well personally if you were thinking of running a cable between the two PC's anyway then id still be inclined to use two cables and a switch, but i can understand that a single longer cable would be cheaper

Exactly. I might aswel utilise the extra lan connection on my mobo. One for the router and the other for a crossover connection to the htpc.

It also saves running two cables. The router is in a separate room from both computers and running cables to the router would be quite awkward.
