How would you approach this? (Neighbour keeping me up by putting his tumble dryer on at 2AM)

Hi there,

I live in a converted garage into a proper bedroom (which was done under planning permission approved etc).

We have just had some new neighbours move in, and they have plonked their washing machine and tumble dryer in the garage (which is next to mine) now this has never been an issue, however the people who have moved in next door, insist on doing their washing at stupid o'clock in the morning.

Most nights I will lose sleep as he decides that he wants to use his tumble dryer at 2am in the morning for an hour or so which obviously keeps me awake, sometimes its just normal clothes, other times he sticks what sounds like shoes in there. I have to get up at 6AM for work so this is becoming a problem.

Im not the sort of person to go round and ask but I feel I need to in this case.

How would you approach this? obviously what I would be asking him to do is maybe keep the usage to reasonable hours, as 2AM is slightly OTT really, Im sure that the sound will be leaking out the door so I bet it wouldn't just effect me if other people in surrounding houses had their windows open at night.

I don't think using a tumble drier in a garage is particularly out of order, can you hear it in the rest of your house or is this a problem as a result of your decision to Have a bedroom in what was originally a garage?

Like I said in my first post, its never been an issue as I dont have a problem with people having that in their garage, but obviously there is a line to draw when you do it at 2AM

Yes it does effect other people in my house, my brother can hear it (when his window is open at night) and his room is upstairs

The garage is an extension of the house, the house is extended to the conservatory, the conservatory is joined to the garage, which is now a room.

Plenty of people do this.

Whats the difference to me playing music at 2am on weekdays? its still noise pollution even from outside my bedroom

It depends on the kind of noise pollution, but just because plenty of people "do it" doesn't mean that it's right or gives you more right to sleep than it does them right to perform their normal activities given what could be their electricity tariff or their own hours of performance.

Perhaps they are night people, if you don't have any other problems than this just have a word with them.

I dont have any other issue, I am quite a reasonable guy and never really complain about stuff I just let people get on with it, however its effecting my sleep quite bad.

I will see how it goes and just have a chat at some point.

Can't be bothered to read all answers.

What's wrong with people nowadays?? asking on forum for advice instead of just talking to their neighbour about it!!!! seriously!!!

What's next? going to another forum and saying "I have a problem with my neighbour and I want to post on another forum to ask for advice, how do you think I should do it?"

Well the general consensus was to go and speak with my neighbour about it, however I wanted to know if the chat would backfire, if there would be any advice on what I could do to back myself up.

But hey ho, if you dont like the thread, dont come in and troll ;)

You needed to ask to get a general consensus? Did you expect that people would tell you "no don't go and talk to your neighbour, they might kill you!!!"".

How can anyone here know whether the chat would backfire, and seriously now, you'll simply ask them to put their washer at a different time, not tell them you want to abuse their children or something. If your neighbour has a fit with your request I'd start worrying about more than the washer.

Finally, I didn't come to troll, it's just surreal to me that someone would ask advice on what to do with such simple issues. I guess my implied advice was just be more forward with these things instead of overthinking them.

Because if they refused then I was looking at advice with regards to noise pollution and what I could use to put a complaint in.

Not everyone in this world is going to be polite unfortunately.

My old next door neighbour from 4 years ago put nails in my tyre because I parked my car half on the curb on the road outside my house and she didn't like it.

Now if everyone was like this the world would be a better place and people could talk to their neighbours without worrying someones gonna get the huff over something minor. Unfortunatly the real world isn't generally like that.

Tis true

Hmmm, I dont think I could be bothered with earplugs, way too irritating, think I might just drink some rohyipnol

Holy crap. Bit of a thread revival. The next door neighbours just had there car and house windows smashed through :/

Was sitting in my room and I heard screaming and shouting then bang bang smash. Went outside and just caught one of the cars going off. Had to run inside gripped my keys, in the car and wheelspun out the street but by the time I got to the end of the street they were gone

Nothing ever happens like this round here crazy

To be honest I think I'm going to leave it a while, i missed my chance, now they have their car and house dun over. They probably ain't going to be in the mood someone moaning about the dryer. The recovery truck has just turned up to take there car away
