How wrong can a test drive go ??

Ouch, bet the guy felt pretty bad afterwards! I'd certainly be slightly red faced.

A little off-topic, but looking through the image gallery, anyone know if there's a larger version of the 2nd pic? Looks stunning :)

I'm sure I have heard that a couple reside in Aberdeen. Quite sad to see a Zonda damaged as they are really quite epic, I assume if the repair goes ahead the test-driver/crasher will be taking ownership, perhaps take the opportunity to plump some F-spec goodies into it.

I thought that fully comp insurance didn't include test drives? Big whoops if I'm right :D

Clearly his did, or the insurer wouldnt be paying for it.

I suspect the buyer arranged for his own comprehensive insurance to cover the car for the purposes of the test drive. It isn't the sort of car you pop around to have a quick blast in whilst pretending to buy.

Slightly unrelated but when you take a test drive at a normal dealership are you insured fully comp by them? Or does it vary based on place to place?

My bad, I wasn't aware the company were paying out as I only read part of the story

I love the fact that Aviva sent one of their guys round to check the car out, who then decided it might be repairable... I mean what the hell could this bloke possibly know about the construction and materials used in a Zonda? Surely they need to send for someone from Pagani to come from Italy?

Isn't the design of the Zonda around a monocoque?

So basically any major damage to any part of the car would make it unstable unless carbon fibre can be repaired to standard where it's good as new? Also you would be able to see where it's been repaired as the carbon isn't painted.

At a cost of £300,000 for repairs though, I think the car will be stripped and it will be re-assembled into a new shell.

Maybe he spoke with Pigani? You can't tell from the article.

Am I the only one who's somewhat embarrassed that the country's largest insurance claim is just the repair bill for one supercar. Or is this in fact nothing like the largest insurance pay-out and as such not newsworthy at all.

"This is the biggest insurance payout we have had for repairs to a private car in the UK. This is out of the ordinary for an insurer," the spokesman said.

An insurance payout for the cost of repairs, out of the ordinary? NEVER!

Largest payout for a privately owned car, by just one insurer. Even then I'd imagine it's just for the payout to the policy holder, not including third parties. I'm positive I could go out right now and cause way in excess of 300k damage within 5 minutes.

From the looks of it, you didn't read any of the story, given that the first paragraph says

One of the highest ever car insurance payouts in UK history is set to be made after a £528,000 supercar crashed during a test drive in Scotland.

It's probably the largest payout in terms of just repairs. The guy who drove a land rover off the motorway and hit a train cause a bill in the 10's of millions.
