Howdy; noob pc building enquiry

Hello hello. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm putting myself a pc together, nearly for the first time. By that I mean I've built wee dopey machines before that didn't require much thought or cost. This time I'm building one that will be plugged into my 37" plasma telly and will be used as a media centre ( I love my MKV rips) and for gaming. I've already acquired myself an Antec 900 along with a Q6600 (which i want to OC to around 3.0 initially, maybe more as I learn more) and an OCZ 500W PSU (which I'm now aware is borderline acceptable for what I want and will be upgrading soon).
I'm hoping to order these parts tomorrow but I wanted to see if any of the experts here could foresee any potential problems or any alternatives that would be an improvement. I won't be able to spend any more than 680 odd though as I'm gonna leave myself skint this month and will be buying other bits n pieces over the next couple of months (BR burner, decent sound card etc etc)

Any feedback or advice will be greatly received. Cheers!

ok,

If you want to save a load of cash, change the mobo to a p5q pro and the ram to some ddr2 stuff. With that cpu, unless you putting it on water or in a freezer your never going to push the fsb enough to test that ram, very little point in having. Take cash you've saved from the mobo and Ram and upgrade your PSU and GPU to a corsair 750w and a 260gtx or somthing similair depending on how much you wanna spend.

ps. oh and change the cooler to a tower 120 or a Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer, (which is new to me but the cooling people rate it as number 1 on there website recently)

as per edward, change the mobo to one of the p5q's or gigabyte p45 mobos's with pc6400 ddr2 memory.

cooler i'd change to the thermalright true with push and pull fans.

Thanks for the prompt response Edward & mp260767, appreciated!

I'm really looking forward to playing some PC games again (I've been addicted to my 360 for the past couple of years) in particular, Crysis/Warhead, COD 4/5 and a couple of others. I really want to get the settings as high as possible, would that RAM you mentioned be ok for that?

I'm also hoping this will do me for a good few years. I take it DDR2 is still gonna be in use for a long time?

And finally, what about this 260? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-078-BG
Cheers again

Oh, and would there be any point in putting in more than 4Gb of RAM? I was going to have a dual boot with vista/xp 64 but I'm not so sure any more. From what I've read though, a 32bit os will only recognise 3.5Gb of my RAM, is this true?

that 260 is good, if ypu got any cash spare you might be able to get a 280 or 4870 x2.

That sys will play crysis in 1900 x 1200 quite happily. :) and yes that ddr2 RAM is really very quick for what you need it for.

thats correct, 32bit will only see 3.5gb of ram. sooo if you've got a 32bit os get 4gb, if you've got 64bit (and a spare 40 quid) i see no reason not to get 8gb. You wont see masive improvments over 4gb but for the extra 40 quid i would personally

Was looking at the prices there for the 280 & 4870 X 2 and I don't think I can justify spending that much cash at the moment. I'm at a loss as to which 260 to buy though, I'm leaning more towards the one I linked to above after a quick google search.

I'm also thinking I'll go ahead and install the 64bit o/s's and stick another 4Gb of RAM in at a later stage.

Thanks for the info lads, this is good sheeet!

You may as well get the cheapest 216 260 there is and OC it yourself. Iv heard the older 65nm cards have a better cooler and run quieter and cooler than the newer 55nm ones but just read some reviews.

Cheers and thanks :)

Oh, 1 more thing, I read that the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer has very good compound paste included, should I order some Artic Silver just to be on the safe side?

Cheers Bradley, I've selected this 260 :

This is how my shopping cart is looking now, near enough the same cash but I'm getting a far better PSU and more bang for my buck it seems

Sorry for the offtopic but...

Both NOD32 and Spybot S&D jumped up with a malware threat when I clicked on that image. Now Spybot S&D keeps prompting me about something attempting to change the registry. Also, my taskbar has mysteriously vanished. Fun, fun, fun. :\

Thats pretty weird, I use NOD32 as too without anything popping up. I didn't think Imagevenue was "that sort" of site.

Not good

I would host your picture somewhere else if i was you, just had some sort of dodgy pron pop up
