How's my spec?

My trusty old 4770K and GTX 780 has started showing it's age and i'v been looking at putting together a new build and re-purposing my old one as a HTPC (but that's a project for another day)
I've thrown together a spec with playing simulation games and media consumption in mind, but it's been a while and I wan't to make sure I haven't missed anything obvious out or made any unwise decisions.

I've budgeted about £2500 including a new monitor and without any peripherals. Is there anything better I could have picked for the money?

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,402.75 (includes shipping: £0.00)

Cheers Guys!

would get a 3700x over a 3800x as they are almost identical, would also recommend a gen 4 nvme instead of a gen 3 one. You can get a sabrent rocket for cheaper than the 970 pro

Not a great time to be buying a higher end gpu as Nvidia should be releasing the 3000 series pretty soon.

That board is terrible, as are most of MSI X570 offerings. You would want the Unify or above for X570. Your best bet to save a few quid is the B450 Tomahawk MAX.

R7 3700X is better value as is a different SSD. The Samsung ones are overpriced.

No need for a 1000W psu.

Not a fan of that cooler either when you can get a good air cooler for half that.

I will post an alternative spec in a few.

Something like this would leave you with money to upgrade the gpu once the 3000 series releases.

Case is personal preference but the Meshify C has good airflow. You also have cases like the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M TG, P350X and the CoolerMaster H500.

The MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX is a good board for the price. Has a good enough VRM to handle a stock 3900X. Prob even handle a stock 3950X.

The 3700X saves £30 over the 3800X.

Added a cheaper gpu for the short term. The RTX 2070 will do a decent job at 3440 x 1440. Once the 3000 series come out you can look at upgrading if you want more gpu horsepower.

Changed the psu to a 650W model. A 1000W is major overkill.

Cheaper 3200MHz Ram, and a cheaper SSD.

Swapped out the cooler for a good air cooler. You could go even cheaper with an Arctic Freezer 34 esports duo if you wanted.

The two extra fans are for the front. Put the 120mm front fan in the roof.

The Monitor is pre-order so you would have to check on availability. Also 3440 x 1440 is easier to run than 4K but you still have the screen real estate with 34".

Cheers guys, I'll probably hold fire on ordering until the new graphics cards come out if they're just around the corner. I've left the 2080 in as a placeholder, assuming the new cards will be roughly the same price or a little more.

Given that there's a little wiggle room in the budget, is there a better motherboard you'd recommend with a bit more room for expansion later?

Total: £2,219.89 (includes shipping: £28.02)

it's not as good as crucial ballistix which is cheaper. there is a huge thread on crucial ballistix lt sport. i would go read that if you want more info.
I'll do that.

Just wondering how you can classify it as rubbish. There has to be a solid reason behind it that makes whatever other brand so much better ? Personally I have Corsair RAM and chose it just for the aesthetics of it

It doesn't overclock well. It's made from inferior manufacturers of ram and is usually the cheapest option for a reason.

However crucial ballistix lt sport is around £70 for 16gb and overclocks to 3800mhz on stock volts.

No it doesn't have gimmicky RGB lights on it or anything like that but it's one of the best ram you can buy and it's ridiculously cheap.

Which makes corsair crap in comparison.
