I used to play Counterstrike source to death starting when HL2 first came out and was at a pretty high level, I recently went back to it and im useless, I figure theres no point getting back into it now.

So hows TF2, im thinking of getting it off steam, I want a decent online shooter I can play for a while, whats peoples opinions?

Is it nice and balanced like CS, is it really popular, have i missed the boat or is it easy to get into and supported really well like CS. CS being my faveriote online shooter, will I keep coming back to TF2.

what don't you like about it?

Cheers

I bought it a few days ago. It's ok, but I don't really like it. I'm still addicted to bf2 and it's a totally different game. It's probably because I don't really know how to play it, but it's definately more frantic than cs/bf2 and probably less about precision shooting. For example as demoman I just spam grenades all the time and spy I just try to get knife kills.

I guess it's just not my kind of game, I've already stopped playing it (though it does look pretty nice)

It's very hectic, but the class types allow for some decent tactical moves to be made if your teams anygood, even more so if there's a few playing on server with headsets able to inform on inc spys, uber meds with pyro/heavy or Demo in tow or annoying lame snipers ahead etc. The game is very tongue and cheek, and imo that is what makes TF2 feel so fresh.

I never really got into BF, I tried the vietnam one and never felt I achieved anything by just standing by a flag (im sure theres more to it than that :p I only played a few nights). Same with power struggle on crysis, although fun its like theres no scope to standout amongst many, like CS brings when you top the kills list. Does TF2 bring this, is it scored on kills or points or mixture?

I liked unreal 2004 so I don't mind the fast paced action style of games too, I liked cod1 online but dont care much for cod4, I cant stand having to aim down the sight. So reckon i'd like it? :)

It's pretty good with the variation of classes and decent balancing although it can get rather intense and stressful at times for a game.

The fact that your going to die before you ever run out of ammo results in incessant spamming of rockets and particularly grenades and sticky bombs from demomen. The problem that most if not all maps have only 2-3 entrances/links between bases means that you can only proceed via brute force as opposed to stealth. The weapon systems available encourage spraying and spamming with large radius explosions and close-quarter spray guns/shotguns. IMO there is little skill in the game other than tactical positioning of engineer structures and an even spread of classes on the team.

Despite this, the game is addictive with re-spawning as opposed to cs waiting till end of round, so you don't spend a lot of time away from the action.

I also believe the playerbase of TF2 is much better over CS, with little to none cross-team swearing or chatting and a lot more focus on team instead of one man killing sprees.

EDIT: Of course, you can always storm forward solo trying to kill as many of the other team before being mowed down and engulfed in a blitz of bullets, explosions and fire :D you just won't get the control point objectives solo

i think as tf2 as a less serious shooter, because of its cartoony, and prefer the likes of cod2/4, if i was in team of some sort i suppose it would become quite a tactical game.

i vote you get cod4 instead though!

It's all right IMO. Can't quite get into it despite hours many hours of playing TF2. Maybe it's just because I suck. I prefer COD4 a lot more.

TF2 and CS are a million miles apart really. You'd be hard pressed to find a dedicated CS player, playing TF2. Unless of course they have had enough of CS and want something different.

Sure people play both, but those that like CS will not find a similar game in TF2. They will find something completely different

Easy to learn, hard to master.

Whilst the game doesn't require pinpoint accuracy aim, you still need good predictive shooting with the projectiles weapons. A good example is the demoman. With practice you can take out enemies at distances by arcing the fire of your primary grenade launcher. Or shooting exactly where you think the Spy is after catching a glimpse... and making a direct hit. Very satisfying. :D

The game rewards aggressive, intelligent play. Every thing the enemy does has a suitable counter - it's up to you and/or your teammates to execute the best response.

The primary reason the game is so great is that it's just plain fun. I've had so many laughs from this game, far more than any others I can recollect in recent times. If you integrate into a few good server communities, you can amplify your enjoyment further as you get to know regular players and organise even more complex assaults.

hmm it sounds interesting, I really want somin I can master and have that feeling of being good at a game like in CS. I have cod4 but I really hate having to switch to aim down sight, its not instant enough for me like CS, the split second you see someone they are dead, you can't do this in cod4 becuase the game doesnt allow you to be accurate firing from the hip. I can see other people liking it though, I guess im after another CS but newer, I was hoping TF2 be that, obviosuly its not.

But then again I don't have time to be serious about a game like CS, so it might be ideal for dipping into a few nights a week.
