I am looking at HP care packs as some of our customers servers are due out of warranty soon. What are peoples thoughts on them? They look like an excellent package for the money, covering hardware and labour including onsite visits if the problems can't be fixed.

The packs would be to cover ML350/370's.

Third party hardware support may be cheaper though, and cover over things like server software, try looking into that as well for comparison.

Post warranty carepacks offer the same level of service as the standard carepacks that may have been bought to uplift the original warranty. You can buy any level of uplift from onsite next business day up to 6 hour same day repair. You can only buy them one year at a time though, so you would buy one year now and then come back next year and buy them another one. HP will cover the kit for up to around 7 years from last day of the product being manufactured.
Hope that helps a bit :)

EDIT: you can buy Support plus carepacks which cover the O/S and the hardware aswell as just hardware carepacks.

what does the standard warranty cover? just hardware replacement due to faults?

Do the ML350/370s' have a 1 year or 3 year standard warranty?

The official blurb on the HP website states, for the ML350:

Service & support features
This product is covered by a global limited warranty and supported by HP Services and a worldwide network of resellers and service providers. Hardware diagnostic support and repair is available for three years from date of purchase. Support for software and initial setup is available for 90 days from date of purchase. Additional support may be covered under the warranty or available for an additional fee. Enhancements to warranty services are available through HP Care Pack services or customised service agreements.

The ML370 states:

3 year parts/labour/onsite warranty. But further information is available here - http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/platforms/warranty/index.html?jumpid=products/warranty

I always get a CarePack when ever I supply a Server and always get them extended when the CarePack runs out, if the Server is still in production.

I have had to call HP a few times using the carpack support and I have always had excellent service and support from them.

Best one so far was a Server that failed one morning - needed a new motherboard and HP had one shipped up to me by motorbike from London to the North East and it was up and running that afternoon.

Some HP Servers come with a CarePack, for others you have to buy one as an extra.

300 series servers and above all come with 3 years NBD hardware support. You uplift this to different levels including software, installation and setup etc by purchasing a Carepack. If you have more questions, post away. Our HP Services Account manager will be sat next to me most of tomorrow so can ask her loads of questions, or just find it myself on our intranet :)

EDIT: And what Dhill says that is all correct.
This is for the G5 (latest models) but it is pretty much the same for all 300 series. If you tell me the generation, I can tell you exactly what it has. Even better the serial number and Part code and I can tell you the day it runs out and the Post warranty parts. (email in trust if needed)

NOTE: Server Warranty includes 3-Year Parts, 3-Year Labor, 3-Year Onsite support with next business day response. Warranty repairs may be accomplished through the use of Customer Self Repair (CSR) parts. These parts fall into two categories: 1) Mandatory CSR parts are designed for easy replacement. A travel and labor charge will result when customers decline to replace a Mandatory CSR part; 2) Optional CSR parts are also designed for easy replacement but may involve added complexity. Customers may choose to have HP replace Optional CSR parts at no charge. Additional information regarding worldwide limited warranty and technical support is available at: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/platforms/warranty/index.html"

We cover quite a few ML110/115's and ML350/370's. All the servers are pretty new G5's.

I am happy enough with the Ml110/115's as they are pretty straight forward to sort out if something goes wrong.

The software side of the ML350/370's is fine, its just the hardware side. The HP warranty looks very good, didn't realise it was quite so good. By how it reads if anything fails hardware wise they will send the required parts next business day and either talk me through how to fix or if its more complicated send our an engineer to do it at no charge. I will definatly get care packs when the warrantys are due to run out but as far as I can see the standard warranty covers everything I am not so sure on.

If one of the drives fails would they also chat through how to replace the drive and reconfigure the array?
