Hi Guys,

Looking for a little advice. I've never bought a HP server, and I have a couple of questions. I'm thinking of buying a basic ML310e Gen8 (1x Xeon E3-1220v2, 2GB RAM, 500GB Sata HD), and upgrading with it extra memory and HDDs. With that in mind:

- can I use generic HDs/RAM (eg WD reds and Corsair XMS kit from Overclockers), or do I need to buy HP''s own brand gear?
- will the server come with empty drive caddies for each drive slot, or do I need to purchase these separately
- If I buy a HP Carepack warranty, will the warranty be valid with the RAM/HD upgrades.

Thanks for your help. I've tried to reach out for help on the HP forums, but they are utterly useless. I thought some ppl here might have the low-down on this stuff.

Cheers.

Generic HDs/RAM will work, unless they use some proprietary connectors, which isn't the case here.

They come with empty caddies if I remember correctly.

No idea about HP Carepack Warranty but I think it only applies to the server itself.

I've had two ML310e G8s through recently. There is a v2 version of this server which has a newer chipset (C204 vs C222) and uses the V3 Xeon E3 CPUs.

Built them with Kingston RAM (4 x 8GB - kit is KTH-PL316EK4/32G). No warning messages on POST but I did spot something in the ILO logs about it not being HP SmartMemory. No issues though. Obviously HP won't cover the RAM under warranty but Kingston give a lifetime warranty on it.

The models I got had a NHP 500GB HD as standard - it was a WD RE4 500GB with a small HP sticker on. Have then got normal RE4 drives to finish off the servers with (especially as HP give 1 year warranty on SATA HDs but the RE4 has a 5 year warranty with WD).

As the price difference between the ML310e and new Microserver Gen8 is pretty small I'm tempted to buy one of these instead. My only concern is my existing hard drives (Samsung & Seagate) not working in it for whatever reason.

Wow those ML310e Gen8 have really come down in price! The model with E3-1220v2 (a really decent CPU) is £340-ish + VAT. Not bad for a pretty powerful little server.

Does anybody know if these are dead quiet?

The one I installed last week is quieter than the Samsung PBX next to it.

Hmm... This has me very tempted in the ProLiant ML310e Gen8 v2. I'm in need of a server for testing/virtualization purposes, but due to space limitations (and physical network cable access), it would need to located in the living room.

The Proliant Microserver Gen8 seems ideal but the price is a bit steep for something with such limited upgrade potential and a much inferior CPU to the ML310e Gen8 v2.

Is it genuinely quiet? Obviously when all the HDD's are being accessed it will get a good bit louder.
