I'm just about to conduct a HPI check on a car. Is it is instant or do I have to wait?

Also I don't know the vin number, so is it worth bothering?

i HAVE a VERY VERY long story which i wont go into

no matter what anyone tells you the HPI check is WORHTLESS without a VIN number.

I got No disguised swearing! over BIG TIME with this

PS yes its instant, get the VIN first though

no vin = no guarantee and the info they gave me was innacurate.

their DB said all clear while experian (competitior) had it registered as write off.

Its a MASSIVE con, I didnt enter the VIN at time of check so guarantee is not applicable.

BEWARE!

Don't think the Vin number makes much diffrence if you know it or not, HPI usally checks any outstanding finance, if it's been reported in an accident, if it's ever been classed as a right-off and any miliage/number plate changes.

It's instant depending who you go with/how much you pay, some of the cheaper ones will be within 24hrs.

Never checked the VIN number myself, thou I've always just had a friend check the HPI via his company (as it's free) I know that they don't check the VIN number against the actual VIN number when they are buying cars for trade in. (main stream dealership so they probibly should but take a short cut)

Right, thanks for that. I won't bother

I wanted to check out a 2002 52 Reg Mini Cooper with 15,000 miles on the clock (cost £8995). The car has FBMWSH but doesn't have an mot so it could have been clocked.

It just seems fishy because he has 3 identical Mini coopers (same age, all green, white wheels, white wing mirrors etc) one with 15,000 on, one with 25,000 and the last one with 35,000 (or there abouts)

What do you think? I havn't seen the car so I don't know what to think. Its from a dealer by the way.

BMW dealer or dodgy back street trader?

Since HPI themselves say they cannot guarantee the accuracy of the info without all the necessary details I think you would be mad to do one without the VIN. I did one when I bought my car and it cost £40, but for peace of mind it's worth it.

Just make sure that you get the info from them before agreeing to purchase. Or better still some dealers will do the check for you.

I did a HPI check with I bought my car. Said it still had outstanding Honda finance. Called Honda to ask what that was about, and they said it was from their own clearing dept, accounts were in the process of clearing this, as I’d agreed to buy the car.

Told them I wanted written confirmation of clearance, and will not collect the car until a second HPI shows that car is clear. Got a clear HPI after two days, and a written signed letter form Honda management saying it was all paid.

Gave piece of mind, if nothing else but HPI has a disclaimer saying no guarantees. Makes it a bit of a lottery really doesn’t it..

Ask them for all the vehicle details needed for the HPI check or ask them to do one for you. If they refuse to do either of these then walk away.

Its being Mot'd today. I'll ask him when he calls back. I'd like to see the car and get the number personally though.

An HPI check isn't necessarily worthless without a VIN number, given that it could still turn up any number of other problems (VIN or no VIN, a stolen VRM that's on finance and has been clocked isn't going to attract much interest!). However, you DO need to provide the VIN number to be fully covered by the guarantee.

Remember that the registers can have finance, theft, insurance etc recorded against not only the VRM but also the VIN. Whenever you conduct an HPI check, where possible you should always endeavour to supply the VRM, VIN, V5 and MOT details. A mileage reading is also good, even if you don't actually buy the car yourself, because it will potentially improve the accuracy of the NMR.

I'd be inclined to say it's simply a co-incidence, no dealer who is into clocking and flogging on cars would be bone-headed enough to pick mileages like that which look so dodgy.

A good indication of whether the mileage is genuine or not would be the service history.

Bah - HPI are monkeys.

A guy wanting to buy the missus' Clio before we moved over here got a HPI check done (with our blessing). It showed an outstanding finance arrangement on the car which came as a surprise seeing how we bought the car new with cash

Lets just say they were less than helpful sorting it out - I had to get my lawyer to threaten legal action before they'd do anything.

Probably a rare case but it doesn't excuse the way they handled it.
