HPI Rant

I'm selling a car which isn't getting a lot of calls. I got a call from one guy today who was super interested. He said he'll do a HPI check and get back to me.

He got back to me and said he doesn't want to go ahead because there's outstanding finance on the car!

When I heard this I was obviously shocked as this isn't true!

So I HPI checked my own car - and this is what is says:

It's actually putting a lot of people off despite there being no finance on the car licence plate!

Pretty obvious the private plate (which was once registered to your car) is now on a Captur and the Captur has outstanding finance.

Instead of having a rant at the HPI company have a rant about this individual looking to purchase your car who clearly can't read

What do the cheaper checks show?

It might not be as detailed and just use a traffic light system which puts off buyers.

Sounds like a bit of a muppet as the finance wasn't recorded against the previous plate until after the point the current plate was applied.

Is there any way of fixing this mess? Who do HPI companies get their data from?

Another guy just phoned to ask if it has finance on it. I explained and said no. He then got confrontational and told me I'm lying.

The check does look a bit misleading, should really just miss out the bit about having finance as that is now on a completely different car.

I'm guessing you've had the car on or after 29/4/15?

The HPI company will have received the information from the company providing the finance. The information they provide links the finance to the plate (and the chassis number). The information you have confirms the finance isn't against your car, just show/tell prospective buyers that.

You can see why in this day and age people get super wary.. the HPI report says 'Alert' and has it all in red, that will understandably cause concern..

However, I agree, it looks erroneous and should not be included as an Alert as that finance was applied after the plate was transferred.

I'd
A. Get the buyer to phone HPI and get them to explain it's OK
B. Get in touch with HPI and moan at their pitiful software logic that has thrown that in the alert details.

I had an alert on the CX-5 we bought a while ago due to a change of plate only.. weird because when did changing to a private plate warrant an 'alert'? Its very normal these days..

My M3 has had multiple plate changes on it due to previous owners putting private plates on it.. it took me an hours to sift through the (extensive) history and tally it all up...

Who do HPI companies get their data from?

HPI get data from the ABI, Finance companies and the DVLA amongst other sources.

Specifically relating to number plate changes there is more detail available here: https://hpicheck.com/number-plate-changes . It even explicitly explains why plate changes are reported and that "you can see whether this information matches up with the seller’s claims. If it does, then there should be nothing to worry about"

I had the same issue when I told my Z4.

The previous owners private plate was involved in a crash, which wrote the car off, so when people hpi checked my car it showed up as a Cat D as that plate is "part of the history of the car".

Fortunately added a note to the advert and got the hpi company to confirm over the phone to any buyers it was not this car in the crash.
