HSBC cards down?

Well had trouble today too with my hsbc card at the shops in Meadowhall. Went into hsbc and apparantly there had been a major error on the hsbc system or something and it wouldnt let anyone get cash out or use their card. Low and behold its worked fine when i was leaving the shopping centre a few hours later. :( :o

Hsbc were not authorizing any cards after lunch today, pain in the rear at work today telling people who have put petrol in their cars to find some other payment.

My mum mentioned this before, she works at Morrisons and said that none of the chip and pin machines where accepting HSBC cards all day.

yeah mine got declined in Subway earlier (luckily I had another card spare) - went to Boots about an hour later and it worked fine.

HSBC do seem to have these random outages from time to time.

Happens to me a lot. Can't get cash out or pay for things. They checked my card in the branch and it works ok. Just goes down sometimes.
I'm about to walk into town, it better be working by the time I get there.

I've never ever had a random outage with HSBC in the 10 + years I've banked with them. Bearing in mind a Switch / Maestro transaction doesn't go anywhere near HSBC to actually be authorised I don't see how this can be their problem. ATMs are a different matter though, but again, never ever had a problem.

This is why plastic is bad mkay?

You would expect the banking system to have a number of backups and redundancies would you not? So that then something breaks the whole debit card system does not go down; poor show on HSBCs part.

I had about 8 hsbc cards that couldn't be authorised yesterday, full on pain in the arse, busy sunday in a shop like a greenhouse, last thing i needed.
Mines working fine, though i do only have about 6 quid in it and don't get paid for nearly 2 weeks, badly overspent this month. How i'm going to get drunk this friday is unknown.

Only time mine seems to fail is about 3 oclock in the morning when i'm drunk and want to get more cash out for more drinks. Phone hsbc "We're doing system updates" what a stupid time to update, friday night, well, saturday morning, when theres load of drunk people want to get cash out so they can keep their fire burning. Or even get a taxi home if they're female.

The cards that were down were those that required Authorisations (such as Solo, self-service and some Visa) and the other cards over their HALO, i.e, requested enough to force an authorisation. Fixed now, just one of them things that happens very very occasionally tbh.
