Spain - Finally....
Hey all,

Have the funds now to get the Desire. I am not renewing my contract next month as i am not being tied into stupid long 24 month deals (18 month annoys me enough!!) so i want to buy the phone outright
Cheapest new i can find is £399 (some smaller retailers are around the £390 mark)... Can anyone beat this??.. possibly using some cashback deals??? I have had a look around but thats best i can do... dont really wanna go the bay route as dont trust the sums of money involved.

thanks in advance as always :D

I pay £25 a month, over 18 months with a free Desire. Total cost £450, plus I got £30 cash back. When you include all the free calls, texts, etc. it works out much cheaper than buying the phone out right.

Where from?

I can only ever find 24 month deals for £25 per month for the Desire

Do T-Mobile allow you to switch it to a different £25 tariff?

IE: The one that has 300mins, 300 texts, internet + flexible booster?

If you go on the link i posted, you can create any sort of deal that you want :)

Or do you mean switch it half way through?

If you are an existing o2 customer you can call them and buy one over the phone for 285 quid. My girlfriend did this last week.

i paid £300 notes of ebay for a new unlocked one, but im mid contract, i however sold my blackberry for £240 so for me it was a no brainier, i wanna go sim only after this contract, once you pay out for a phone its like upgrading a car, you sell your old one and buy a new one when you want, resell value on smart phone is very high getting £240 for my BB was a pleasant surprise,

its just that first outlay of buying the phone to get started

It doesn't quite work like that really unfortunately. You're just luck the Desire is so cheap compared to it's retail price at the moment.

For example O2 offer an essentially identical contract to the one I linked to (300mins/texts and web) for £20 sim free. That deal linked is £25 a month or (with cashback and quidco) £20 a month plus you get the phone free. You can usually find deals like that all the time so paying £20 a month and buying a phone for £300 feels like a ripoff to me.

Yes you can say it is only going to cost you £50 because you got £250 for your BB but if you went contract you would also have that £250 to play with instead of spending it on a phone. :)

Personally I think getting a cheap contract deal is the best way to go, you get the free phone at the beginning and essentially every 18 months after plus you can sell the new phone every so often, replacing it with a new one. So essentially it's the same price as sim free but you get a free phone you can sell every year and a half.

Can i ask exactly what dept she spoke to and what she asked for please?.. That sounds bob on to me and if i can get it for that brand new from o2 i will be very happy! (ps i am still in contract for another 2 months)

Cheers :D

Yeah, after buying my Nexus from Google in Feb I'm not messing around with taking out expensive contracts just to get a decent phone anymore. HTC sell a lot of their phones sim free on places like Amazon and Play so they're easy to get hold of.

As far as she can remember it was retentions. I found the deal on that site with the hot deals, there is a big post on it there.

yeah i think its the way fwd, in Hong Kong you get like a contact will 1000 min, 1000 txt and all the data you want for about £5 a month yet the phones can cost a bomb.

i imagine i can sell my desire in 12 months for at least £100 and then buy another phone, i might pay slightly more over the term, but i can upgrade when i want and also leave whoever im with when i want. when it was 12 month contracts that fine, but they are pushing us towards 2 year deals now = bad :(

I agree with the latter point. 2 year contracts are evil. I've been lucky in that I've only even had to have one 18 month contract and I'm going to get another one because I know what i'm doing for the next 18 months. After that I'm going to have to reconsider what contracts I get as i never know when I may be leaving the country...

Unfortunately it's not just mobiles that are being pushed on to 2 year contracts, there seem to be loads of sectors where contracts seem to be being lengthened. :(

its a bad thing, how about they lengthen warranties, i believe in the USA you get 2 years standard warranty on laptops for example,

These 18 and 24 month contracts are EXACTLY why i am buying the phone outright! I phoned o2 today and i got the phone for £285 inc VAT - i am over the moon!. Nowhere can you buy the phone brand new for that price!.. Happy days!
