HTC Desire - Google Nav issues

So having purchased Co-Pilot I decide to give it a go from Gloucester to Bristol (my work journey) - midway through route I am on the M5 and it flashes up that its lost its GPS signal - this went on for a good 5-10 minutes and it just did not seem to come back!?!? (I have used my Tom Tom countless times along this stretch with no issues; in fact my Tom Tom has never lost its GPS signal). I basically would have missed my junction (M4 from M5) - Even Google Nav would have at least remembered the route; co-pilot completely gave up. I managed to get it back on track a little while later by closing/re-opening the application, so I don't know if this was the app or I just somehow picked up the satellites again. The device was showing a H signal and the icon for GPS on the top status bar throughout. Once it was back on track it was really good and recalculated immediately when I deliberately chose to divert from route.

I am hoping its a one off, but I am starting to think that Sat Nav on mobile phones is pretty dire by comparison. Anyone else have any issues?

Yes..Most the ones i tryed seem to have a big problem with being able to find or work in the channel islands :p (thinking about it,the same goes for tomtoms)

Well, the good news is that I done the same journey this morning (but in reverse) and had no such issues. CoPilot worked flawlessly and redirected the route when I again deliberately ignored it. Let's hope it stays like that.

That said, I have seen these GPS bluetooth devices for your car which look to improve GPS signal? Anyone have any experiences?

:)

They usually use the same chipset (in a lot of cases, a SIRF star 3) but come with the benefit of being able to mount in a space where it will have less interference and will likely have a larger antenna which is always good.

That said, I wouldn't recommend one in this day and age. They were more for the mid-decade phones which just began playing with tomtom for windows mobile etc...

I had something similar happen to me on Monday on the way to work just as I got into Guildford. I had to turn GPS on and off. After that it worked fine.

Have a look at Sygic MM10, it's a nicer interface to use than co-pilot but no idea if it's more accurate, only used it a couple of times. Google nav was pretty easy to use going from London to Ardrossan to catch a ferry but then I had signal almost the whole way up. One annoying thing was it didn't give a distance left and time of arrival on the display but maybe you can customise it to show up, it was a bit interesting when you know your cutting it fine for the last ferry of the day.

One thing to note on the htc Desire, leaving auto brightness turned on it kept the screen at max brightness the whole way, after 6 hours it flattened the battery using the official htc car charger kit, turning it back down to about 30% saw it charging back up pretty quickly.

One other thing to add; my HTC desire was incredibly hot when I unplugged it from car charger after just 30 min journey. Does everyone elses get that hot? I would be concerned if I was going on a 2/3 hour journey.

yeah mine was like that, sat in the full sun with charger on and back screen but it's fine after two 6 hour journeys doing it.

I guess that kind of heat won't impress the battery so much... I guess the CPU was running fairly hard all the time, hence putting off the heat.
