HTC Desire internet tethering on a Mac- how?

I am trying to use the HTC Desire to tether the internet connection to my macbook, running Snow Leopard. However, it doesn't seem to work. I have read that it should work just plug and play on both mac and ubuntu so am a bit confused. Any ideas?

I get a new network device (android phone) in Network under System Preferences, but don't know the right settings.
