I am a bit behind the times with phones. I still have a Nokia 6303i. :D

My sister has just upgraded to an HTC Sensation XE and is willing to flog me her Desire for £40. Good price? Envirofone are offering her £78 so she is doing me a favour.

She will factory reset it and I am going to have to network unlock it to Voda, as it is on T-Mobile. I have a SIM only deal and can add a data package for peanuts.

I am only really going to use it for calling, email and a bit of surfing so I assume it ticks all the boxes for the monies?

I see there is a massive thread but are their any basics I should run / change on it?

Yes its still a decent smartphone and well worth £40.

Though in terms of speed/smoothness/app storage/camera etc etc it quite far behind the current top end phones.

I currently have a rooted Desire with Sense 3.5. Contract is nearly up so had a look at the Samsung Note and Galaxy Nexus. My Desire is comparable to the new phones in Speed and Smoothness just lacks the camera and a bigger screen. The Desire is still a great phone with a good modding community.

Only recently sold my Desire, and it was an excellent phone - certainly a great starting point into the World of Android :)
Battery life is not all that, but few spangly phones these days have more than a day.....and the storage available for apps can be frustratingly small.....but hey, nothing comes close to it @ £40 !

It will be a good entry into smart phones for you, cheap, decent midrange spec and well built. You'll need to charge it more and the onboard memory means you can't have 6 billion apps but you'll do absolutely fine with it.

It's a great phone for £40, assuming it's in good condition.

Developer support is great if your into modding.

Not really anything you need to change on it.

Gingerbread (android 2.3.x) lets you store apps on the sd card so, while the internal storage is a tad small, its a non-issue.

As others have said its a great phone for £40, my wife now uses my "old" Desire and does every thing she needs ...still a very good phone and great for messing around with custom roms.

Cheers chaps. it is indeed in mint condition. She keeps it in one of those sock things and I was looking at it last week. Not a mark on it. I think it is her second one. :)

I've just finished downgrading an old HTC Desire from Gingerbread (2.3) so that I could use the free SIM unlocker app and I also made a goldcard to debrand it. The SIM unlocker didn't work with the 2.3 but once downgraded to 2.2 it worked perfectly first time saving £15 T-Mobile were asking.

I've also put it back to 2.3 again and it runs very smoothly and it has the AMOLED screen so probably still worth a decent amount.

If you need any help getting it SIM unlocked using the free app and/or downgraded just ask I'll be able to point you in the right direction.

wow 40 quid isnt bad at all, had that phone for over a year an thought it was pretty great, nicely reactive, pretty impressive battery in comparison to other smart phones...id say lucky you.

AMOLED or LCD screen?

I have it here how do I find out?

My SIM deal is with Voda and I know they will give me an unloock code for free so that is all good.

It has been factory reset so do I need to update anything? Should I change the OS?

I have absolutely no idea what to do with it.

Don't change anything for now.

Open up a solid black image (or go into a menu), does the image/menu look grey-ish or do the blacks look very deep, like 'proper' black.

There's probably a better way to find out but you can probably see from that. :p
