sorry it's a long one
Hi. I'm looking to get myself an HTC hero on vodafone (I live in a valley... I know vodafone works so want to stick with it) for £25 pounds a month. Unlimited internet would be a priority with texts coming second and calls 3rd.
Vodafone don't offer the phone themselves but I've found it on carphone warehouse and 'mobile phones direct' within my budget.

The carphone warehouse website seems a bit vague on details regarding mobile internet.
with one deal saying

500 MB Anytime Any network
250 texts Anytime Any network
75 minutes Anytime Any network

and another at the same price saying

300 minutes Anytime Any network
Unlimited texts Anytime Any network
http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/HTC-HERO/MONTHLY

I'm assuming this means internet is limited at 500mb on one deal? whilst the other deal provides more minutes but no internet (I have just been in a store though and was told that they do offer an unlimited internet deal at my price of £25)

so the other offer and the one I'm swaying towards is with 'mobile phones direct' who offer

Your Plan £20 + Web
+ 75 Minutes
+ 250 Text
+ Unlimited Mobile Web
+ £20 Free Accessories
+ 3 Months Free Insurance
with the final cost of
£25.00 per month 24 month contract

I've absolutely no experience of having a 'new' phone and have never been on a contract before, so I'm a little cautious of diving in and getting this deal.
Could somebody with some knowledge look over this deal for me

(hope linking is ok)

and point me in the direction of any hidden charges or anything stupid i'm missing?
or if they know any other sites offering better deals on this phone that would be nice too.
a man in a phone shop told me (after I nearly bought it for £25 a month at the carphone warehouse, and after seeing the online prices) that 25 a month for what I wanted was ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS which has made me very slightly wary, although I have a feeling he was talking rubbish because his shop couldn't offer this price.

anyway hope i'm not clogging up your board with stupid questions, but I need help here!

thanks!

im on 02 and ill be getting the htc hd2 (i think) on monday and i get 600 mins,1000 text's and unlimited internet.

all for £20 a month.

That's a long old contract to have with a phone that is being replaced in the next month or so.

The HD2 "replacement" is going to be a version of the phone with an inferior screen... designed for people (like me) who think the original HD2 is too big for their needs. The HD mini is going to be almost exactly the same phone isn't it? (Will it be eligible for WM7 upgrade?)

The Hero replacement is the Legend, read the OP :p The Hero really is looking a bit dated now, the screen lets it down.

I got confused by the lack of threading on my view, I thought you were talking about the HD2 in the post above yours.

As for the Hero you are absolutely correct. The hardware platform for the Hero is about 2 years old and weeks away from replacement.

Last week Three told me that there was supply problem at HTC if I wanted one as an upgrade. I interpreted that as either Three were lying or HTC had switched manufacturing capacity to the Legend.

That being said I just bought a Hero secondhand for £160 which I thought acceptable. This isn't the best time to go for a current Android phone as all new ones are being released left, right and centre over the next month.

Both the contracts in the OP are advertised as "unlimited" internet, but both have a 500mb fair usage cap, Mobile Phones Direct just "forgot" to make that clear :) My guess is after 3 months they'll start charging you for insurance too unless you cancel it :(

As others have said the Hero is due for replacement shortly, and will be succeeded by the much nicer Legend, hands on here. Its due for release sim-free on 1st of April, not sure if/when Vodafone will release it.

If you need a phone today have you considered the HTC Magic? Vodafone do officially stock this, it has the same hardware underneath as the Hero, [ie outdated hardware], but looks less blocky, and I think you can now get the Hero's Sense UI on the Magic via HTC's website :)

These are unfortunately standard features of mobile contracts with 3rd parties and directly with the network.

All mobile phone internet deals have a fair usage policy (I exclude blackberry from my statement as I'm not sure what the deal there is...) of 500MB or 1GB counting both inbound and outbound.

And no one gives you free insurance (unless you haggle for it somehow) and all introductory offers expect you to do the legwork of remembering when to cancel.
