As far as I can see Droid 2.1 was released for the Hero on Orange on the 16th of this month but I can't find the download. The Rom upgrade on the HTC website is not 2.1 firmware and the ses-pit of a website Orange.co.uk does not reveal much either.

Anyone managed to update or am I being lied to?
 
It is not released yet. They pushed it back again till the end of the month. It is arriving Over the Air anyway, you wouldn't need to do anything other than click yes to the download when it pops up on the phone.

My understanding was that you will get an OTA prompt that the update was available, and then need to update it using the standard computer and lead route. Tis a massive jump from 1.5 to 2.1, the phone will need a complete re-working software wise and if it was available OTA you'd probably get loads of people bricking their phones through not having enough charge and the like. Further to this the last update was ~100MB (can't remember exactly) so I would have thought an OTA would have be a bit rapey bandwidth wise for mobiles. I might be wrong though!
 
The OTA update can be done completely wirelessly. That's not to say that UK networks might decide they would rather not, due to their bandwidth attitude/issues.
 
Enthusiasts worst nightmares come true. Having to wait that long I'm tempted to go try some of the third party 2.1 roms.
 
Right well ive managed to get so far, but now im stuck with an error. Ill list what i did first incase ive done something wrong.

First i formated my SD card and then downloaded

FlashRec.apk
Amon Ra’s Hero Recovery Image

I put these in my SD cards root.

Then downloaded a file manager from the market, went to the SD card and installed FlashRec, opened it and clicked backup recovery image, then typed in the text field /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img and clicked flash custom image.

Then booted up the phone into recovery mode to check it had worked.

And now onto where it goes wrong :( the rom im trying to install is Cyan.

So i downloaded the rom, put it on my SD cards root and renamed it to update.zip

Turned the phone off and booted back into recovery mode. Went to Flash Zip from sdcard, then onto SDCARD:update.zip, pressed home to confirm. and then i get the error.

Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...

Does anyone have any idea on what im doing wrong? :confused:
 
Still on 1.5 here, my Hero is my work phone, so I don't want to go messing with unofficial firmware on it, waiting impatiently :o

Link to the ROM you downloaded, think you may have got the wrong file!
 
Downloading a couple now to try.

3G is hella slow at downloading 2x100mb lol


Hopefully my next post will be with me being happy :p

Well not happy :(

ROM completed install, so rebooted and now it goes to HTC (and light a shinning light behind it) the animation stops after a while and it freezes :(

Tried a wipe and install again just incase but the same thing :(

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix it and get my phone back? :p

mine took about 8minutes to complete that stage. You sure you are not just being too impatient?
