not knowing very much about these things I have got it in to my head that I can simply pop in to an Orange shop and use their £5.00 a month low user option. On top of this I am wondering if they will let me add a £5.00 a month internet option. I am however under the sneaky impression that the data bundle is limited to between 7 at night to 7 in the morning and not all day etc. can somebody clarify any of this? Thank you. Also, as a way to cut down on data usage, can you simply use your broadband at home and dwnload adinfinitum from your pc to the actual phone.

got to watch with them if you go aver the deal the pricess go out of control my freind had 1 with vodafone and some of her bill were more than double the agreed amount

Huh, explain? If I have Oranges HTC Hero can I connect it to my local wireless network and use it that way? Dont see how orange can restrict your access via wireless.

Orange's Unique service uses your home wifi as a femtocell (google it) to improve phone coverage at home. As result of this ALL data connections at home are going through Orange's system. Consequently you pay Orange for the privilege of using your own wifi.

Search the internet and you'll find a few rants about the Unique rip-off.

I reflashed my Touch 3G to a more generic firmware to get rid of Unique.

The official small print:

When you browse the internet on your phone, your service plan data charges will apply, even if you are connected using the Unique service. Unique is designed to boost your mobile call coverage and won't connect you to the internet through your home broadband.

Was gonna say, they dont say anything about it on their website, HTC Hero is still on the top of the list for a new phone next week then :)

They didn't (and still don't) say anything about Unique when I got my Tiouch 3G.

You need a very specific base station for this to work.

Femtocells are an alternative way to deliver the benefits of fixed-mobile convergence. The distinction is that most FMC architectures require a new (dual-mode) handset which works with existing unlicensed spectrum home/enterprise wireless access points, while a femtocell-based deployment will work with existing handsets but requires installation of a new access point that uses licensed spectrum.

Managed to get the hero on 500mb of data with 600 mins quite cheaply so I am quite happy about that. I just need a few pointers now about whats available for the phone etc.

few apps ive got installed since getting the phone on friday :D

  • F1 (updates for the F1 season)
  • FotMob4.0 (Premier League / SPL updates)
  • SportyPal (use this for walking, tracks movements speed etc and can report back your exact route via google maps)
  • Record It (my first pay for app, use if for sky + recording etc, works brilliantly)
  • Netcounter for monitoring data flow (wifi and mobile are independant)
  • Facebook (official app)
  • Flixster (for movies, finds times in cinemas local to you and can dload trailers reviews etc)
  • Compass (self explanatory)
  • Google Sky Maps (pretty pointless but free LOL)
  • Ringdroid ( a must for using mp3 ringtones)
  • Shop Savy (bar code scanner to find best prices etc)
that should get you going m8, oh and theres tons of games. Doom is pretty cool :)

Thanks for the list :)

Edit: just wondering about this as my network signal (orange) is pretty dire at home-so is it possible to access the android market place via pc and usb any of the apps?
