HTC Legend trouble....Would rooting/debranding help?

Hi all

The HTC Legend is my first ever smartphone. Its also perhaps the only gadget I have ever owned, that I have seriously considered throwing at the wall :D Its a Vodafone branded version, and when it works, its great. But I am forever either without a signal, or a poor one, even in known good areas. If I pick the phone up from the desk, any signal disappears. (I am aware of this being due to the battery cover, and have since developed the Legend grip :D)

Also, The Wifi will connect but not stay stable at times. I can get full Wifi, but move 2m from the router in the same room, 1 bar. Router streams to TV downstairs, so I know the Wifi is not that bad. As for 3G, as far as I am concerned, it may as well not exist. You only have to wander over to vodafone`s forums to see I am not the only one with these issues. As far a vodafone are concerned, there is nothing wrong with the phone.

After much googling, It would seem that anyone who has these issues, seems to have a Voda branded Legend.

So, as per titile, and with the risk of voiding my warranty, would rooting or debranding possibly have any positive effect on this phone? I figure I cannot possibly make it any worse.

As you have guessed, I have not done this before. Can I render the phone useless permanently? With 12 months left on my contract, I really don`t want to wreck it. Ive done plenty of messing about with PC`s etc over the years, but never phones.

I just want to make using what seems to be a decent device more enjoyable.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Fwiw, current Android version is 2.2 (Via vodafone update)

The bit that's probably of most interest for you is the modem driver more than the branding (although they quite often come lumped together in the same ROM image). The modem driver covers BT/WiFi/3G/2G. If you find that de-branded ROMs come with different drivers (might be called radio or modem or chipset driver - it's nearly always in reference to the same thing) then a different ROM may help.

You should probably compare it to a handset at the same time and place on the same network to rule out the fact that it's not just poor signal coverage as there's no such thing as a good signal area tbh :)
