HTC Touch Pro

I'm looking to get one of these when they are released for the UK and keep hearing about people syaing they ahve flashed the roms on their devices such as the HTC Touch Diamond which is similar to the Touch Pro. Can anyone give me a rundown of this flashing stuff including the following info:

- Benefits of it
- Why people do it
- Risks
- How you do it
- How do you know if a rom is compatible
- How do you know whcih rom to use and what they include or if they are stable

I would appreciate any answers for these

It would be better just to google XDA forums, all this info including the actual roms themselves are on there
