HTC TyTn, how do i use the keyboard?

Thanks for the reply.
I posted the same on XDA Dev, but the members there are so stuck up that it got closed within one post, saying i hadnt searched around. Even though i had quite clearly stated in the post that i had! :(

Anyway:
Contacts>Select Contact>Menu>Edit>Ringtone

Now, The ringtones on that list are all located in the Windows folder, so try coppying an MP3 file in there and see if it appears on the list. You can easily set an MP3 file as the default ringtone but not sure if it can be done for each contact.
So just in the windows folder, and it'd then show up in the list of ringtones?
Does the same apply to message tones? (forgot where to change that, where do i do that again?).

If its not there, then you've got an older firmware version and you'll need to flash.
Its not there on mine.
How do i get/flash the new firmware?

According to the device information screen, these are the versions i have:

ROM Version: 1.18.255.3
ROM Date: 07/22/06
Radio Version: 1.03.03.10
Protocol Version: 32.34.7010.01H
ExtROM Version: 1.18.255.106

Is it worth me going through the process of upgrading the ROM?
I take it i'll lose all my settings and whatnot? With the only things being kept being the things that Sync with Outlook & the stuff on my memory card?

I was thinking of waiting till the WM6 ROM release before i bother flashing the device tbh.

Why can't you get Launcher to work? We are talking about
Got it working. :)
How do i customise what apps it displays?
Because at the moment its displaying all the apps in programs, when i only want a few of them, and some out of settings as well.

What are you using to play MP3's? Try Mort Player with Clean Glass skin. Very nice.;)
Works now, a restart fixed it. :p

Also:
- How can i get the Wifi working corectly with the access points here at work? They dont seem to want to work. Works perfectly at home though?
And can i make it so that the only thing that uses the 3g/gprs connection is the MMS? As sometimes IE or whatever trys to use that instead of the Wifi.

- How can i organise my phonebook 'properly'? As some contacts appear as 'Elliot, Fred' instead of 'Fred Elliot'.

- How would i go about making it so the contact pictures are actually useful? Ie; so they show up when a txt off that contact comes in?

- Anyway to use emoticons in txts?

- And Syncing the phone only displays my emails from my PC that are in the inbox. It does display my sub folders, but theres nothing in them? Ideas?

Thanks again, and thanks in advance, your help is much appriciated.

I could do with knowing that as well as mines like that

Im trying work out if my TyTn is borked.
Every time i bring it out of standby, for a split second, it appears to have been in landscape when in standby, then it quickly switches back to portrait. Only for a v.v.v.v.split second though.
And it took me 10 restarts last night for it to pick up my network. For some reason it went into flight mode, but although it was 'out of it' it wasnt, as it kept saying 'wait 15 seconds'. It evantually worked though.
But then it wouldnt charge, although i 'think' that it may be a dodgy power adaptor, as it worked fine in the morning, and appears to charge perfectly well when connected to my laptop or PC.

Ideas?

Yup, just copy the tone into the windows folder and it should show up when it comes to changing it. The same goes for message tones and alerts. I've copied the Nokia message tone to the windows folder and have that as my sms alert tone.

I'm 90% sure that it only works if the sound file is wav format. I don't think MP3 format will work.

To change tones: Start>Settings>Sounds & Notifications>Notifications

Good god thats an old ROM! Thats the ROM that shipped with my Vario II when I purchased it back in September 2006!!!

I would strongly recommend you upgrade the firmware asap. Mine is:

ROM: 2.11.255.1
DATE: 03/07/07
RADIO: 1.38.00.10

This ROM has been completely bullet proof for me. You'll get increased stability (not had to soft reset with the stylus and no lockups etc), improved battery life and updates to the WM5 OS. The HTC ROM I'm using comes with AKU 3.3. Think of this as a service pack for the WM OS. It fixes a load of issues and adds features like WPA2 support.

If you flash the firmware, you will lose everything on the phone. Not sure if it wipes the memory card as I always remove it during a flash anyway. If you've synced the device with your PC, then you'll have all of your contacts, notes, appointments backed up. Once you've done the flash, simply sync and restore all of the details.

You could wait for WM6 but as you're using such an old ROM I'd suggest you upgrade to one of the latest WM5 ROM's until WM6 comes along. The latest WM5 ROM's are excellent and are vastly superior to the older ROM's.

Try reading the Readme file that came with the download ;)

To add and remove programs on the launcher display, use either the File
Explorer on the PocketPC device, or ActiveSync's Explore option
to copy shortcut files from My Device\Program Files into the MyDevice\Launcher Folder.

Its a bit long winded but well worth it simply for the fact it won't slow down the device and simply just works.

Can't answer the first part I'm affraid. There are all sorts of factors like how the wireless access at your place of work is set up. Any MAC address filtering set up? Is the encryption WPA2? If it is, it won't work as WPA2 isn't supported via your current firmware.

For the second part, you'll have to go into Start>Settings>Connections and have a play in there. I can't really help you with this as I never use the Wi-Fi feature. Sorry.

BoomAM said:

Not 100% but I don't think theres anything you can do about this as its just the way the address book in WM is. All my contacts are surname, firstname. I don't have any with firstname surname.

Have you recently copied contacts from the SIM card to the phone? I think that sometimes cause the problems you're having.

I've had smartphones for the last few years and always use the phone to save contact details. The SIM is very limiting with the amount of info you can store (just name and number). With storing details on the phone, you can store a load of data per contact and more importantly, sync with Outlook. So when I get a new phone, I simply sync and it copies all the details to the new handset.

BoomAM said:

I personally don't bother with contact pictures, but when you assign a picture to a contact, doesn't the picture flash up when the assigned contact calls?

BoomAM said:

Not that I'm aware of but again, its something that personally doesn't interest me. There may be a 3rd party app that adds the features you require though.

BoomAM said:

Again, pass. Emails are one of the things I don't sync with Outlook.

Hope this helps!:)

Do you keep the handset in the case that came with it? Im refering to the one with a magnetic lid. If you do, then ditch the case for something non magnetic. I found the magnet was interfering with the display and causing the issue.

Other than that, try a firmware upgrade

Try an updated firmware.

As you noticed, your phone contains Radio version 1.03.03.10. This is responsible for controlling the signaling. Newer Radio versions can improve signal strength, quality and stability.

Think you might be right there.

I do. :p
I dont think im gonna bother with a new case tbh, adds too much bulk imo.

Try an updated firmware.
Where, how and is there a guide around? lol.
I take it that i need some of the stuff off here?.

I should be ok flashing a new ROM tbh:
Outlook seems to have all my email/contacts/notes/calender stuff on itself anyway, so thats easy to restore.
I havnt got MMS/GPRS working properly yet either, so im not losing settings.
And all the apps ive installed thus far i still have on my memory card for later installation.

Thanks for all the help here GuruJockStrap. Much appriciated. :).

If you find xda-developers a bit to snotty , give www.4winmobile.com a visit
Thanks. :).

On a side note, found this page:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5_Tweaks_Other
Shows us some reg tweaks, in particular, theres one to 'move' the ringtone folder to the memory card, which could be handy. :).

For everything Hermes related, have a read over here. It includes guides on have to flash and links to all the files you'll need.:)
Ive read all the stuff on XDA, but im still not 100% about the specifics. :(

For example:
- Which is the latest ROM?
- Do i need to SuperCID it?
- Where is this ROM updator software available from?
- Can it be flashed from Vista?
- Is it literally just connect the TyTn, sync it, run the ROM software, point the ROM software at the new ROM, and let it run? Or is there more to it than that?

I'd ask the questions on XDA, but those ppl are so stuck up that i wouldnt get a meaningful answer. :(

Thanks, ive seen that site.
Good guides, but their orientated around WM6 upgrades. Which while will mostly be the same as WM5 to WM5 upgrade, still doesnt answer my other questions fully. :)

Thanks anyway though. :).

##EDIT##
Ive played around, and it appears my bootload stuff versions are:
IPL-1.00
SPL-1.04
Old i take it? :p

The one at the top of the list is the latest version available from HTC and its what I've been using on my Vario II without a hitch.

BoomAM said:

Taken from the XDA Wiki:

The CID is a string that identifies carrier and language of your device, it is contained also on ROM upgrade files and is used to check that you're flashing your device with the right ROM.

The flash utility and bootloader check this string before letting you flash anything, that is why if you want to flash an English ROM on a German device you get an error, if you want to flash an i-mate ROM on a Orange device you get an error.

The ROM upgrades from XDA do 2 things. When you run it, it first sends a small file to the device that puts the handset into SuperCID mode (meaning you can flash any firmware). Then, it loads and flashes the firmware.

BoomAM said:

I simply downloaded the ROM upgrade from XDA and that's all. The exe contains the newer firmware and also the tools required to flash and the whole process is automated.

BoomAM said:

I'm not 100% sure but I recall reading a while back that it wouldn't work under Vista. That may have changed by now though.

Nope, connect TyTn to PC, establish an Active Sync connection, run the exe and thats all.

Managed to do the upgrade. :)
Thanks for the tips.:)
Appears to be more free memory as well on the device, which is allways a good thing.

Just installing all my apps now:
- Adobe Reader.
- MediaVision HandWallet.
- .net CE.
- Launcher.
- Opera.
- Kevtris.
- GoogleMaps.
- nfPencil.
- PocketPicture.

My only problem thus far is that Launcher wont work.
Ive installed it 3 times now and it doesnt appear!?

Doh! Forgot to enable it in the today screen! :p

The phone doesnt 'feel' faster. If anything, it appears to be a little slower in places tbh. But that might be because ive rebooted it so often in the last few hours that nothing had chance to cache. :p

Im also find that this new firmware adds features that before i needed 3rd party programs for. Which is good.

All im looking for now is a today screen stats plugin, one that'll display battery life, signal strength, a slider for brightness, ect; (i know one exists, because ive seen it on screenshots). And to find out what 'increase battery life' does in HTC Tweak.

Otherwise fine though.
Sounds daft, but for some bizzare reason the phone feels lighter. :p lol. :D

The more you use the phone then the more you'll notice how the firmware makes things a bit more responsive.

Don't know what that tweak in HC Tweak does exactly but it does have an impact on battery life. Definitly nothing detrimental to useage of the phone like reducing signal power for example. The fact you've flashed the firmware with a much more updated radio version means battery life will be improved. The other big drain on batter is screen brightness, so take that down as low as possible. I have mine set at one notch on the slider above off. Use Wi-Fi as little as possible too. That thing is such a drain on the battery you can literally watch the battery deplete.

Why do you need a signal strength display? Is the one in the taskbar at the top of the screen not good enough?!?

As for battery display, theres only one program you need; Batti. Its free, uses hardly any memory and best of all, does exactly what its supposed to do.

Not sure if theres a freeware screen brightness adjustment utility for the today screen.

If you're willing to pay for software, then check out SPB Software.

SPB Pocket Plus includes a whole heap of things for the todat screen including battery meter, quick launcher and screen brightness adjustment. I did give this a try and while its great, it does use up a lot more memory than the freeware alternatives (Launcher, Batti, HTC's X Button app). There was also this 1-2 second lag everytime you returned to the today screen from closing text messages for example, as the Pocket Plus plugin would refresh. That got on my nerves after a while hence me switching to the freeware alternatives. Much better now. Does exactly the same tasks while using less resources and having zero impact on the responsivness of the phone.

SPB Mobile Shell might also be worth a look.
