HTC Vigor - 720p display

My upgrade is due in September. Still happy with my HTC Desire TBH but I may change to this or equivalent if technology can get its finger out and make the battery last for longer than 2 days with use.

Unfortunately I know nothing (HTC handsets usually "just work" and don't require much testing) although the 720p thing was a given for H2-2011/H1-2012 as the displays reached final testing H1 this year. It's just the cycle HTC use and to be fair - it works. December unit sales are 30% of a years total so you need a handset out then to maximise returns. Motorola has a different cycle (in the US it's Jan-Feb/July-Aug), Samsung have a "rough" 10 month cycle at different pricepoints, it's pretty predictable :)

HTC do move exceptionally quick with their handset replacements and have run on an 7 month turnaround time for their next tier-A handset for quite a while but I think they got slapped around a bit as others have pointed out with the S releases and it cost them sales. Being top dog in Android is a fairly useful thing as the market is crowded and being known to provide the best helps at lower tiers of handset too. Doesn't help their competitor is an absolute giant at all pricepoints either.

I'd prefer it if HTC kept to a 1 year flagship launch schedule to be honest.

One very cheap handset (Wildfire), one mid range handset (Desire S) and then one top end monster (Sensation).

What would be wrong with that! :(

nobody said that about the iphone 4? the dpi on a 4.3" 720p display is only slightly higher than the ip4.

That's only a small 3.5" screen (and people still said it was a bit pointless)
Does everyone use these big phones right under their noses? Maybe some distance charts are needed :p

Why would it matter to you though? Is your worry that Apple are releasing iPhones every 16 months now and they will fall very behind very quickly now?

I say bring it on, when you look at how much Android handsets have improved since the beginning of 2010 the rate of development is phenomenal. Why should we stifle this just because a few people feel out of date? Owning an iPhone is annoying for a lot of people because when they come out of contract a lot of the time the current iPhone is too old and the new one is still half a year away. This is why a lot of my 3GS owning friends have moved to Android over the past 6 or so months when their contracts expired.

It doesn't matter to me really. I'd just like Android to be more defined and not just 'everything works with everything' as it dimishes quality when software is designed to work on cheap and nasty phones the same way it does on the more expensive devices.

I don't think Apple are releasing iPhones every 16 months either, this was just one product cycle, it may well go back to 12 months.

Ultimately it doesn't really matter, top end Android devices are being released all the time so there's no way Apple will be able to stay on top for long when it comes to hardware, especially as they don't really make it themselves like Samsung do.

I know what you mean, I think Apple have made a big mistake delaying this launch as I've said many times before - I didn't think they would. However, the Japan earthquake could be to blame for part of it.

If the picture in the first post is real then the handset itself looks boring as **** and just like every other htc android device. Needs a big change imo.

I think it'a quite good choice of resolution, especially for watching 720p streams on justin.tv and youtube. :)

Personally I haven't been able to see any difference between WVGA and qHD for 720p video streams (4.3" screens around arms length)
But it'll be interesting to see if there's a difference for higher quality 720p content (with no output scaling)

Do you have to have a special 'Dr Dre' contract with these like the iPhone?

500 minutes with some hoes.
Unlimited weed.
500mb of Dr Dre tunes.
