HTC Vive

Heads up for anyone who uses Revive, the newest Oculus Home update has bricked it, they finally implemented some checks to make sure an Oculus headset was physically connected.

Luckily standalone or Steam games that only support the Rift like Assetto Corsa still work.

Mine has been picked up for "repair" too many green pixels for my liking. Let's bee what happens. Replacement, same one sent back with nothing said, or a phone call to say they won't fix seems to be the various results.

If I get a call that they won't fix I might threaten charge back..it has been 6 weeks though

Everyone needs to try DCS world, its free on steam.

Its a very complex flight sim, however load up the tf-51d mid flight and use a gamepad.

Really mind blowing flying in the mountains, top 3 VR experience so far.

edit: 5 on the numpad centers your view.

So I have my PC upstairs in my study but the vive setup downstairs for the extra space in the living room, thankfully the study is pretty much next to the stairs and with 5m cables the breakout box is left hanging about knee height in the living room which works ok

Whats been a real annoyance so far is if I have to rerun room setup or say I have a controller that wont pair etc, I've essentially been goin up and down the stairs sorting it out. Its not really been the smoothest experience

Also due to this an observer in the room cant see what the person using the vive sees

I remembered badly that tribalinstincts was using a hdmi splitter to mirror to his TV and he'd said about doing it with the vive feed (what he actually said was to split the monitor feed, and he was capturing the vive feed) so i tried this and ofc my TV wouldn't recognise the vive feed because its 90hz and not a resolution it can display and the PC wouldn't recognise the HMD with it in the splitter, double fail

In pondering this issue id nearly given up and opted to buy a second HDMI lead to connect the TV as an extra monitor and solve it like that, but then id have to operate it as a separate screen or reduce the res of my nice new X34 to something the TV could show to be able to duplicate it, gah!

Then of course I come to the realisation I should have had at the start, which is to chromecast the PC screen as is to the TV, I even already have a chromecast but my brain is clearly not running at its full clock speed at the moment and it never occured to try it

So yea, long story short.. If you have your roomscale setup in another room and want a mirror display a chromecast does a reasonable job and didnt seem to cause any lag/framedrop in the headset

Am so close to ordering one but after reading the forums theres a few things now putting me off. Ive seen quite a few people selling them ater playing with them for a week or two due to lack of support/games. I understand its early days, why you cant just put it aside for a month goes over my head clearly theres other reasons!. Warranty is also worrying, 1 yeat warranty? Really? After paying 800 quid i would expect more than that considering the dead pixel issue and remote failings...

I donno, am so close to getting it but i fear its gonna be a 1 week toy before going back to my 144hz 1440p gsync. This is coming from a guy that had a dk1 rift, great bit of kit but back then it was so brokkeenn.

It is amazing, I had a DK1 and DK2 but the Vive is superb.

But its a lot of money.

If you have spare cash, go for it, if you don't, then leave it.

I don't use it all the time, I use it maybe 1/2 hour each day, but it is great fun. It comes down to the money really as £700 is a hell of a lot really.

For me, its an expensive toy that hasn't impacted my normal gaming.. still playing my usual games in the same way as normal.

Thought so, I donno if I can say 700 big slappers are worth it for a hour a day toy. HOWEVER, If support keeps increasing for it I could see myself using it more, IE When Elite gets there stuff fixed, Planet coaster is looking into VR, Star citizen and HOPEFULLY BF1 might dip there toe in it. Totally tempted.

It is early days, but there are worthwhile games on it already and more in the works. I personally dont see the point in selling if you are only likely to rebuy it again in future. I suspect those doing so have been swayed by the possibility of selling it at a profit in the short term and then getting one of the shelf a bit cheaper when they hit stores which doesnt sound like its far away

With dead pixels if you get one to start then you just return it, you can return for any reason within 14 days anyway and thats a valid reason. After that its unlikely its going to go the year and then start developing dead pixels, not something I would worry about. The controllers too are well made, unless they are DoA the only way they will fail is if you mishandle them and replacements will be available if you do that, but it wouldnt be a warantee thing.

As for comparing it to your PC screen, its apples and oranges.. having a VR HMD is not going to take away the use for your PC screen, you wont be browsing the web, facebook, checking your emails or editing your spreadsheets in VR and there will still be non-VR games you play (my vive has taken second place atm while I play dark souls 3!). At the same time, you will not be able to get VR like immersion on a monitor. If you havent tried one already you cant compare it to an image on a screen, it is so much more than just having the view go all around you but its not really something you can easily put into words so you'll just have to try it and have your mind blown

It isnt perfect, there is some sde and its not super high res yet but even taking that into account, I've seen people with high expectations still be impressed by how the effect was much better than they imagined it would be, I've yet to see anyone come away saying it fell short of what they had expected.

Am I right thinking I don't need HDMI? My single HDMI port got pulled about so now my screen flashes black now and again which I'm sure would be a horrible experience in VR. I've got 3 display ports.

We need more posts and more.views that the rift thread. I know they have been around longer...but still..this is the vive.. So awesome, mine is in rma

Myself and two friends all have a vive. Between us we must have pretty much every game out. If anyone has any tandom questions about the vive then fire away, we have been smashing out a few hours on them!
I have also managed to get some of the oculus software to work which is really polished and very impreasive compared to the "beta" games that are on steam.

Anyone know any good apps for playing videos (mkv etc) with resizeable screen? Looked into Virtual Desktop but didn't like the way that screens are limited by physical monitors.

big screen beta seems to be the only app so far. you can resize, change distance and curve the screen. problem is the res is too pixelated when trying to navigate windows. picture seems ok when watching a film, might as well sit closer to normal screen though. got slightly excited when sbs 3d was in the update yesterday...didn't work properly though!

Will check it out thanks. I'm curious to see how different 3D video is within VR compared to a 3DTV.

Hmm; anyone had to update their base stations? Was unable to update wirelessly and connected the first via USB but it’s now been stuck updating for over 10 minutes with a warning not to unplug in case it renders the BS unusable!
