HTPC Build..

yeah, you have to rename your files like:

Folder Name:Big Bang Theory
subFolder Name: Season 1

bigbangtheory.s01e01
bigbangtheory.s01e02

etc..

Then the scrapers (think its thetvdb and themoviedb) file those and download the relevant data for each episode and all the logos etc.

This is what I mean.

You can also name your files like this.

1x1
1x2
1x3

For episodes 1-3. I found this much quicker. I had a tonne of TV shows so manually renaming took a while and this was easier than typing s01e01. A great program for you if you don't know and any others who is interested is "the renamer." You drag and drop your tv shows into it and it spits them out all perfectly renamed for you to be scraped by the TVDB.

Occasionaly if the files are named strangely in the first place. It wont find them. I also noticed... if it found them in the first, so would XBMC. However the advantage is you know what the file is when browsing via folders and not on XBMC as the file would be the name of the show etc.

I'm babbling. Try it out and see what I mean.

Always wondered by NZB Matrix uses this naming convention - will come in useful i imagine - does sickbeard support sorting the folders for you?

Also, Buchanan, you reference XBMC, does this work with mediaportal/ WMC?

Forgive my ignorance, what is PVR?

Edit: Another question is FFD show and AC3 filter; is it best to use both and in what configuration!

I have another question,

I take it the PVR feature is a software feature for the pc so if you are routing a tv/sat connection through the HTPC, you can record it live?

Also wanted to ask, about Freesat HD, currently have the Humax box - is it possible to do away with this and instead source a USB freesat HD receiver that's compatible with Mediaportal (for EPG or something similar) and is comparable/better than the humax? I have seen a technisat box but it doesn't have buzzing reviews shall we say..

Basically yes, If you have a freesat reciever compatable with medial portal then you have use the interface to record live tv.

Afraid I won't be able to help you with the specifics of the differents boxes though, as I use sky I've never dabbled with it.

That's fair enough.. Another question you possibly won't be able to answer is - if i achieve a set up with a freesat receiver compatible with media portal, would it be possible to stream the freesat through mediaextender?

Having an absolute disaster with the software set up. Can anyone lend me some advice on the best way to set up my HTPC from a Win7 Fresh install?

Well I got Windows etc on there. For some reason, opted for a codec pack rather than installing standalones, have a pci-e DVB -S2 card, couldnt get a decent picture in WMC 7, gonna try installing mediaportal with a tv server tomorrow, but was wondering what kind of codecs are worth installing and how to configure

Why are you installing codecs?

Programs come with their own built in. Just install XBMC and enjoy. It plays everything right out of the box without any faffing around.

Was it Klite by any chance?

Dunno tbh, i'm going to completely uninstall the codec pack and register the windows defaults, although I will just install a cyberlink for MPEG 2 and MPC-HC extensions for FLV and H.264

I does sound like you are over complicating it. For my HTPC set-up I have:

XBMC
SabNZB for usenet downloads (legal only of course)
Sickbeard
Coachpotato
TV Catch-up for XBMC
TV Card

all running on W7. Installed everything in that order and it works perfectly out of the box.

Are you intending to watch .flv files on a media PC? I thought it was being used for movies/tv shows on a TV?

You really don't need to install those things.

Download VLC if you want to play a file without using XBMC. It plays everything fine. I can't help but thinking your making this more difficult than it should/needs to be...
