I've been using my HP Microserver with a HD6450 GPU to play my media using Kodi in my room for the last few years but would now like something a lot quieter. The device would purely be for media playback as the Microserver would be placed elsewhere.

I'm unsure about whether I should get a Raspberry Pi 2 and use the Openelec OS on that to play from my server. Or if I should build a small HTPC using the AM1 platform. Alternatively are there better options?

Can you not just stick the server somewhere else in another room/cupboard and run long HDMI cable to amp/tv?

I have my server in the garage and run a 10m HDMI cable from 6450 ati card to amp though the wall. Bluetooth remote operates it.

I've had a longer cable from the server to the Amp before but the room I'm planning on putting the server into is on the other end of the house and the server was just going to be connected to the network by homeplug as this room is a pain to route cables from as I'm not allowed to go through the walls.

If you want something with a built in infra red remote you could check out the Beebox's. Otherwise something like a NUC or another microPC should suffice. you may even be able to get away with one of those stick PCs.
