HTPC or media player? same thing?

I just plug an ethernet cable into the back of my TV's and it shows the NAS from which I then play the movie I want. I don't get menus, a simple directory structure but it plays most formats without the slightest problem. I see all these threads of streaming devices, PC's, conversion etc, am I missing something because all I have is a TV, an ethernet cable and a NAS and it works like a dream. Genuine question.

We're just geeks (programmer here), I kinda like playing around with the hardware and the htpc software as much as using the thing in the end. It's like what's the point in owning anything other than a basic shopping car :)

Im going to have a bd rom in my main pc for ripping. If you dont mind ripping before you watch, theres no need for a dedicated bd player.

From the flipside i personally can't see the point in having a bluray drive in a PC that isnt a htpc, as ive yet to come accross anything on bluray other than films.

I would use it as a DVD drive for software etc and I would assume any HTPC or media streaming environment would required a BDROM in it somewhere to rip blurays?
