HTPC, server, NAS or all in one?

Thats not very good if xbmc does support hardware acceleration, afterall its become very important in htpc setups, no one wants a 720/1080p mkv pulling all the resources of your hardware exactly.

Is there any plan too use it properly from ati/nvidia cards?

The current official build doesn't have this option to run video rendered in hardware on the ION 9400 but all the current syn builds do! which will also be in the next official release.

I just checked there news section;

DXVA2: Elupus has already added the initial code for gpu offloading in Windows (Vista/7 only). Not to be confused with DSPlayer below.

Been 4 months since that last update or is it already released with the camelot release ?

I may give Xbmc a go or go boxee box route :)

Sorry to bump this. But I am one of those users who use the search function here.

I am in a similar position.

I am considering a NAS,
BUT I also now use XBMC on my laptop connected to tv via HDMI running, win7 64bit all controlled with my harmony remote.
But media is stored from a external USB 1TB HD.

I want something that runs Raid 1, so I have a complete back up of music, movies and most importantly family photos in case one HD should die. (Raid 1 best for this?)

Can I build a HTPC to sit alongside the rest of my AV equipment, have it run XBMC + Squeezebox music server (I have a wireless music player-squeezebox)

But also act as a NAS?

What I want is a one box solution for all this.

I also would like to ability for friends and family from other parts of the UK to be able to view certain folders, ie pictures from there homes.

XBMC does support Hardware decoding hence the benefits of a ION based machine.

I run a Zotac Zbox ID41 and get absolutely no jutter at all.
Cpu when playing a 1080p movie is only around 30%

Also consider looking at OpenELEC.tv as you can use it as a stand alone box just for XBMC.
Its what I use and its awesome!

I ended up building a HTPC based on i3 530, GT430, 4gb ram, 60gb SSD and 2tb hard disk. I run Win 7 and use XBMC. All the other laptops in the flat can access the media on the HTPC (Wake on lan is awesome).

I was worried that i'd fill up the 2TB quite quickly, though in 2 months theres still 1.5tb free space!

If you want a proper NAS, it might be worth going down the unraid route. You'll be able to run squeezebox on there, but you wont be able to run XBMC on it.
