Hang on a sec - didn't I say to play with AC3 Filter from the start? We had to go through nearly 20 posts for this?

I did actually have AC-3 filter instalelled when I checked your first post, but I think the machine was so screwed with various versions of other codecs and filters (FFDshow audio, Cyberlink DTS etc...) that I lost sight of that and only got a result after a rebuild. Don't think I wanted to go through this full blown procedure I'd have taken a 5 minute fix two days ago if I'd been more on the ball. so thanks to DolbyDigitalTHX too

It was most likely the fact that you were using VLC. VLC is a self contained program that uses its own codecs and doesnt use system codecs, so the fact you had AC3Filter installed but were using VLC basically meant AC3Filter wasnt being used.At least with MPC you can right click on the video playing - filters - and see what filters are in use. Easy for troubleshooting that way.

As I referred to in my first post, I had experienced the same sort of thing, but it was some time ago and I couldn't recall exactly what I did to sort it. I reckon it probably was a rebuild of sorts, as I had to uninstall all that unnecessary Creative software - amongst other things, it was preventing me from outputting bitstream. Also those Codec Packs were something I should have avoided - better to just install things individually as and when you really need them.

I ended up moving my PC to the office and playing video through Xbox/PS3 - but I have to say, everything looks so soft in comparison. Video through a PC with the right decoder/driver/settings can look awesome. Well worth the effort.

Anyhow, I'm really glad you got this thing sorted. Just remember the golden rule of personal computing:

Computers are perfectly fine, as long as you don't install any software on them.
