HTPC to replace the raspberry Pi

Of course ;) I was just making the point that the noise isn't a big issue. If you get an SSD you can boot up in no time at all so something worth considering, which means you can turn it off if it's a big issue.
 
It shouldn't be loud enough to impair a sitting room environment... But that said just turn it off when unneeded or do as you say, put it out of the way. :)
 
I have mine on 24/7 in my front room on a shelf/rack thing behind my sofa and honestly can barely hear it.

The volume from these does seem to vary a bit it would seem

Mine is louder than my pc which has 2 graphics cards with stock coolers which is why its in another room downstairs.
 
Been looking at these for a while now, but not sure I want to move away from the likes of Roku and Plex.. (for what I need it for) So not sure if it's fast enough to stream 1080P
