What do I need to install on top of vista ultimate for playback of xvid, divx, mkv etc?

Normally I would put in vlc and k-lite pack but I was planning on using coreAVC so I didn't want anything to interfere with that.

So at the moment I have:-

drivers, upates, AV etc
core avc
haali media splitter

what else should I add? What is known to conflict with AVC regarding mkv playback?

I would have thought that all you need to do is specify the coreAVC codec as the one to use for mkv and other high def formats that it supports in WMP11 or the Media Center portion?

Normally I would put... k-lite pack

and then you would do a fresh install. I'm not sure about Vista but for XP I have and every thing works.

FFDSHOW, Haali splitter, Quicktime and Realtime alternative. Media Portal.

Here's what i use:

Codecs:
FFDshow
Real alternative
Quicktime alternative

Haali Media Splitter (which isn't a codec) for MKV support

Software:
Cyberlink PowerDVD 7.3 ultra, for HD-DVDs (and Blu-ray soon)
Theatertek DVD player.

I use Theatertek for playing all media (well, video) except HD-DVD as most things can be done from the remote control, and specific file types can be sent to FFDshow for upscaling. I use a custom graph that will let Theatertek play MKV files, which is set to use Cyberlink's H.264 decoder (but you can use CoreAVC if you want).
