So from the sounds of it, I would need a proper HTPC running a transcoder not one of these little pre-made boxes?

the boxee box runs XBMC, it's a fork of it.

Ah I did not know that, thanks! When you say fork though, is it fully featured, or their custom skin? Eg can I reskin it, install plugins, etc?
