Hubble Finds Unidentified Object in Space, Scientists Puzzled

i'm so enveous of that camera..Wish I had a telescope that could see things like that...even if they wern't that far away! I'd be there all night!

Clearly none of you have read Peter F Hamiltions book Pandora's Star. This very phenomena formed the basis for that book. I won't spoil it for you but to be honest we should be building ark ships to get the hell out of here right NOW!.

what phenomena? Buy by you saying ark ships i'm guessing you mean some kind of gamma burst from a super nova.

Of course we couldn';t actually build a radiation shield to stop that burst, nor escape it.

So come on you know what this spot is tell me, so i can ring nasa and get some k9ind of reward.

Can we go shares on the reward? :(

If someone can ring me and translate what Tefal is saying above into english, I will give you a reward. :p

That's more Larry Niven (the Puppeteers, Fleet of worlds) than Peter Hamilton* (more sinister).

Back on topic, this is the sort of reason we need instruments like the hubble for pure research, the appearance of this object be it an exploding star, white hole, alien attack fleet could help prove/disprove a theory (that might prove important in other areas), or help with new lines of thought.
IIRC it was a radio telescope that helped prove (of led to the realisation) that pulsars existed, which in itself probably isn't much help but it does add to what we know and help understand things that little bit better.

*Which reminds me, the new book (Temporal Void) is due out in about 3 weeks :D

Where did i say there was a conspiracy?

I just find it odd and even suspicious, would the government keeping military secrets be deemed a conspiracy or national security? I think you've got conspiracy on the brain.

Depending on the legality of the the secret it may or may not be a conspiracy.

I just find it odd and even suspicious

So why not just email and ask for the full pic rather than, saying it's suspicious :/

Also i find the mars lander images odd, the colours aren't right by design or accident, who knows but they sure like using infrared for red and 'tweaking' don't they, all i want is a standard ccd to show us true colours, the same goes for many satellite images of mars, odd and even suspicious i would say.

The true colours have been released along with the tinted ons used for publicity reasons (after all people want to see the red planet, not muddy brown with bluish sky planet)

Fun? Have you heard any of the conspiracy's around, most revolve around things that are anything but fun, who wants to think some group is conspiring against them?

Apparently quite a lot of people.

however why can they not launch the James web telescope on the same orbit, take that up,and then bring Hubble home? Surely it wouldn't b a problem and you would only need one mission to do 2 things?

Sorry but that made me laugh quite a lot. The James Webb Telescope will be in an orbit 1.5 million km away from Earth, the Hubble is only 600km.

It's quite doubtful they'll bring the Hubble back because to do so would require a separate shuttle mission, it's a massive expense that would purely be for sentimental reasons.

What people want is not what science is all about, i don't care what colour the planet is as long as we see its true colours as our eyes would. Have you ever seen those hirise images, the ones that look oddly computer generated/manipulated, whats up with that? The satellites around earth don't have trouble showing earths true colours, plus theres issues like seeing black and white ones most of the time instead of colour.

Also another strange thing is that we never actually see the whole earth at once in hd colour from a real distance, yet we get plenty of close up stuff, strange that, why can't see the whole earth, im sure theres plenty of satellites monitoring from that distance?

The pictures look odd because you're used to seeing things on Earth, Mars has a very different atmosphere to ours which has a huge affect on the light coming from the sun. That's why some of the photos don't look real. Most are also composites of several images, as well as composites of colour layers which were taken separately to improve the accuracy.

If you want to see the colour of Mars for yourself, exactly how the eye would see it get yourself a very good telescope and have a look at it!

You think there are loads of satellites with normal cameras watching the whole Earth?!?! Why would there be even one? It costs a hell of a lot of money to put something like that in space so why would they do it for something that would have no real value.

If you want to see whole pictures though quite a few have been taken by Astronauts and I'm sure there'll be a few videos knocking about somewhere as well. Just not 'plenty of satellites' streaming high res views of the whole Earth.

so an alien space ship is bright enough to be seen from at least 130 million light years away and stays still for 100 days.

Why the hell do you post all these alien conspiracy stuff.

It's more than likely some sort of star or phenomena we have not seen before. As we watch the skys and get more powerful telescopes we will increasingly see stuff we have not seen before.

Those reasons are poor at best, i understand they often use filters for higher resolution and layer them under RGB channels which is fine, however they also often use infrared for red and manipulate them giving a false impression of what it really looks like, and lol at looking through a telescope.

Hmm let me think, countless reasons, research on any number of things, weather for one, those weather ones are in geostationary orbit most of the time so they can easily see the whole earth but all they do is keep a zoomed view, what about aurora monitoring sats and what not, they must have a wide angle view of the poles, in fact i know of one or more sats that do view the whole earth but the problem is that they're in infrared black and white low resolution stills that update every hour or so, again lol at being able to see very old pictures, seriously!?

He never said alien ship, the only thing really relating to alien ships was the reference to tin foil hats, which was only a joke and its what 'people say' when these thing's spring up.
