Hugh's Chicken Run

Why exactly are chicken breasts more premium than legs?
I suppose you also think that fillet steak is the best as well?

They aren't. They taste the best to me and obviously I have to explain that.

No, I can't tell the difference.

EDIT: Actually breast is the most expensive and therefore more premium surely?

Watched both programs now and will admit he has made me think about how chickens are reared. I think it's a fair price to pay (£6 ish) for a chicken that has had a good life. After all how often do you buy a full chicken? What you don't eat you can freeze. As long as it's uncooked or has been cooked in something.

People have to remember that a lot of the things you buy contain battery farmed chickens, frozen pizzas, chicken nuggets, sandwiches etc, then you have to think about mass produced products with egg in, battery hen eggs :\.

Agreed, does make it seem like hard work. But if you buy free range eggs (which most people do and think it's the right thing to do:confused:) you can make your own butties, pizza, etc For less money as well.

I don't particularly like eating a chicken leg straight from a roast but the meat is juicier. Also good for some chicken fried rice, chicken noodle soup, chicken sandwiches + plenty more.

Although that said we barely eat whole chickens in our house. Maybe like once every 6 weeks or so. The freezer has the packs of chicken breasts in it as it's much more convenient. Ofcourse we could always freeze the meat once cooked but my dad doesn't like anything other than breast meat either.

Well, it's certainly priced at a premium but IMO legs actually provide the better meat.
It takes a bit more effort, but if you skin and bone a chicken leg you're left with meat that's a lot more flavoursome than breast and can be used in a wider variety of dishes.

The stir fry in this thread was made using diced chicken leg

The woman on the programme who was complaining that she can't afford free range - doesn't look like she goes short at meal times to me. ;)

We were meant to be having chicken stir fry tonight - that quickly turned into a veggie chilli.

Although I'd classify us as pretty much full-on liberal, organic, guardian reading pinko scum, for some reason we haven't (until now) bought free range chicken (but we do buy free range eggs bizarrely). Will only be going for free range meat from now on though.

I am a premium person and therefore eat only premium meat. What do you think is wrong with me??? What should I do? "I'm sorry Mr Random Stranger on the internet I will change the food I like for you"

Unless you are making an innuendo joke in which case that is perilously uncool.
Sorry mate, but that attitude stinks and the whole battery farming lark has come round because the market was driven by people thinking like that. You shouldn't eat meat at all if you can't handle eating the whole thing :/

Premium person my ass, you're common as muck like the rest of us.

Surely eating animal should be viewed as more of a treat, seems to be a thing in the UK where you must have meat in a main meal everyday of the week.

Good program though, today an email went around about margarine being one molecule away from plastic but thats another topic...

I said the exact same thing to the wife only my comment was more along the lines of "eat half the amount and you will be able to buy better quality and lose weight, the fat ****"

Fortunately we live in lincs so are surrounded by local farms.

I have three farms that I go to and buy my meat and veg direct from.

Lots of beef, pork and lamb and vegetables but chicken is very hard to get. Apparently its the most expensive animal to rear organically - mainly due to the costs of the feed. Managed to get one the other day (huge bird almost the size of a turkey) but cost £16. Mind each breast will do me and the wife so I am getting at least 4 meals out of it.

Its just so much better seeing the animals that you are going to eat. Plus its nice to buy veg with mud on it. On a final note regardless of what anyone else says fresh local organic produce tastes much better.

I see there has been a misunderstanding. I like breast because it tastes nicer to me. I don't see why I need to explain to Moses why I like it more so I gave a sarcastic answer.

Your bit in bold is absolute garbage though. Battery farming has come about because it is the cheapest and provides the most profit. Do you eat bull's eyes? Testicles? Don't be so dramatic and I'll eat what part I please thank you very much.

I asked the question because I wondered why, I wasn't demanding an explanation, merely requesting one out of interest. What is a forum? Oh yeah, a public facility to meet for open discussion. Sorry I asked a question on a forum. :|

Why do you like legs more than breast? Shock horror is it because they taste nicer to you?

:\

Diamonds and graphite are made of the same thing, OMG, HOLD THE FRONT PAGE.

Seriously read into it?

Was made to fatten turkeys up but too many tumours were killing too many birds.

Where lard has been replaced with marg skin cancer rates have risen in line with the uptake of marg.

Have you never thought why it doesnt go off, nor mould grows on it.

For ref: Diamonds and graphite are natural occuring forms of carbon, not a polymerised hydrocarbon.

Years ago when I was still at home with me folks we had chickens. I got flamed for it at school with everyone thinking it was wierd and smelly.

But nothing beats proper eggs from a chicken thats had freedom :)
