Hugo Energy App for Smart Meters

I've had this app installed for a week or so now. I hadn't heard of Hugo until another member posted a link in another thread.

It's a great idea and I'm quite impressed with the app overall. It's a LOT better than the SECURE home monitor I have. I can set budgets, look at hourly usage of gas and electricity and see what uses the most and at what times.

It can be a very useful tool to help deal with rising energy prices as well as our effect on the planet.

I wasn't sure either until I saw this bit. May give it a try when I get home.

Whilst our credit card sign up process is secure and encrypted we understand some people prefer not to sign up this way. We also can't sign up some customers using their card details if their MPAN and address don't match the network's database.

As an alternative you can sign up using your In Home Display's (IHD/GUID) unique bar code - it can be tricky so we've created an explainer video you can watch on the MEET HUGO web page.

I don't have an IHD, which means card details (why??) are the only way to verify. My credit card is in no way linked to my energy accounts, why do they need it?

Is it not a reliable proof of address? To ensure only you can get access to your meter?

Gave this a try, but it appears there is no real-time usage, which makes it a bit useless for identifying which devices are causing high consumption

Do any smart meters offer real-time usage? I thought they only reported from the previous half hour interval.

Do you need to enter your MPAN for this as I tried to add my smart meter to Samsung Smartthings but it cuoldn't due to a known fault with my meter that has no timeline to be resolved.

Yes it needs the MPAN, either adding it manually or it finds it automatically based on your address.

Perhaps, but there's no way in hell I'm giving my card details to an unknown developer with an app that only launched a few weeks ago - there's literally no background or known history for that company.

I wondered what their angle is, but it seems to be that once they've seen your energy usage, they can provide alternative tarriffs as an affiliate. Really clever idea.

I had my smart meter install by Octopus in early December, the IHD showed electric, didn't show gas (still doesn't) - the online admin area showed Gas & Electric.

Open a ticket just before end of the year about the IHD, they start looking at it, electric then disappears from online admin area, gas only shows.

Wait a few weeks, ask for update, get asked to wait longer. Followed up with Octopus early Feb, get told still looking at it, wait longer.

Signed up to Hugo a few weeks ago, in 2 days they open a ticket on my behalf and get readings, then 24 hours later, readings all showing in Octopus for Gas & Electric on admin area.

I still have no update from my Octopus ticket.

Ah just tried to register and it says the same as eon and its not registered to the smart network. Think it's a smets1 meter, more woeful smart issues.

some similar options glowstick/n3rgy/geo , which also appear to use an intermediary who accesses dcc data

Good evening.

Did anybody actually start using n3rgy API and managed to pull data from home smart meters? My SMETS1 meter(s) are finally smart again after 4 months and I was able to sign up at n3rgy website and give consent to collect data by them. I know I will probably sound a little bit like a weirdo here, but still not 100% sure this is really free service for personal use

The way I understand it, GlowStick from Hildebrand connects directly to smart meter HAN zigbee network, same way as IHD does. Meaning, that when you put kettle on, IHD display goes to “red” within 2 seconds (so basically shows real time electricity consumption). And if GlowStick is connected the same way, it will also send consumption data in real time (to their Bright app, not DCC).
But when you work through “central authority”, the minimum time you can get up-to-date data is 30 minutes.
And don’t get me wrong, I think device is great.

I can confirm that Geo do sell directly to the public. I purchased their CAD module and installed into my Trio 2 IHD (provided by Ecotricity without the CAD.)

It seems to work as expected. I can get live import readings from their cloud API now. I currently pull this data every 20 seconds and push it into Domoticz (my choice of home automation software.)
