NASA to smash its spacecraft INTO THE MOON

The mavity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) ships, Ebb and Flow, will be intentionally crash-landed on the Moon now that their low orbit and fuel levels have ended their mission abilities.

The crash and burn, scheduled for 22.28 GMT on Monday, will hit a mountain located near the Goldschmidt crater, finishing a mission that start on 1 January this year.

"It is going to be difficult to say goodbye," said GRAIL principal investigator Maria Zuber of MIT. "Our little robotic twins have been exemplary members of the GRAIL family, and planetary science has advanced in a major way because of their contributions."

My reaction, littering on the moon..

Surely it's better to crash it into the moon in a controlled way rather than leave it orbiting for years until the orbit decays and it crashes randomly, probably leaving a larger mess?

What an odd reaction you have.
Oh and jsut so you know there's poop on the moon from the Apollo missions. Along with a load of tools and other waste, so they could bring back more moon rocks.

5 days?

Monday 17th evening: craft impact with the moon
Tuesday 18th : crack pots claim moon is wobbling. NASA issue press release denouncing such theories.
Wednesday 19th : serious scientist concur that their measurements indicate a distinct oscillation. NASA remain quiet.
Thursday 20th : Both amateur astrologists and professional boffins suggest that the Moon may be getting closer to the earth. NASA release press statement, neither confirming nor denying this, but irrefutably denying that it could, in any way, be their fault.
Friday 21st : Somewhere on a different plane of existence, the sublimed Mayan's tell us "We tried to warn you"

Well at least they will actually land something on the moon this time.

RUNS AWAY LAUGHING :p

So I take it they crash this into the moon, then the moon falls into Earth on Friday, hence the end of the world?

Oh **** I just pieced together how it's going to end.

Astrologists? :eek::mad:

I always feel a bit sad when i read these stories, I know their only machines but im sure the scientists must have developed a close bond with them over the months/years - saying bye must be pretty tough.
