Humming...

some older HDDs to make a real racket. my old Raptor 150GB makes loads more noise when in use compaired to my new VerlociRaptor 150GB, which is all but silent even in use. might want to consider upgrading it if that's the problem.

Right, update:

Gromited the PSU fan and no difference, so I decided as a few said on here that it must be the HDD's, so I made some silicone feet (using sealant) and tried again. Lo and behold the humming had gone and the machine was very silent. However I couldn't get any signal to the monitor...

After a week of non use I managed to go out and get a DVI-VGA adaptor thinking I may have broken the old one, nothing happened, so I swapped the PSU cables around in the PSU (modular) and signal worked (I fiddled with some other stuff as well so maybe...).

Anyway after using it for a day I realised my newest 500GB Hitachi HDD was missing, with all my media on... So out comes the PC AGAIN and I find the power cable has been knocked out, plug it back in and turn on again, humming starts again, with vibration of the case going from practically nothing to noticeable..

I've just unplugged the power cable again and the humming has gone again, so it's obviously just that HDD that is causing the problem. Which to me indicates maybe a dud HDD? It still seems to work and there is no *click of death* however none of my other (older) Hitachis' hum up and down.

RMA? It's only about a year old.

I'm not sure you will be entitle to a replacement though? The hard drive itself is still working, but it is just making noise? My hard drive makes the same sort of noise, maybe it isn't as loud, but 'loud' comes down to the user's opinion, which I don't think it is anything to base an RMA on. I think you will only be entitle to an RMA if the drive is actually faulty but I could be wrong?

Try getting a marble or granite breadboard from asda or wilkinsons (they're cheap like £10) as hi-fi listeners really recommend this for speakers (to improve sound). I imagine it could help with vibration noise you're pc makes. Worth a go anyway

The only way I managed to stop my HTPC from humming was it remove a HDD. Even though they were both essentially silent, it seems two them were resonating off each other, causing a WWWwwwwWWWWwwwwWWWWwwww constantly.

my lian li case came with these rubber rings that you put between the screws and the HDD holes, absorbing most of the vibs - really nice feature. you might be able to do something similar with your case. also try keeping the HDDs as far apart from eachother as possible, and away from other internal components. and tie up all your cables so nothing is loosely touching the case.

That's the thing, i'm not sure if it is "damaged". My slightly older Hitachi's (2 x 250GB versions) don't make remotely the same noise, and the much higher vibrations and non constant nature seem to suggest to me that maybe there is something wrong with this specific one?

As mentione before with just the two 250GB drives on there is next to no vibration, however when the 500GB drive is plugged in it starts to vibrate massively. The 3 drives are in a single (standard Lian Li) holder with the 250GB drives at top and bottom and the 500GB drive in the middle.

Mine did too, and they are already on the drives, it's fine for the other two drives, just not the 500GB one it seems.
