Hurricane Gustav

So do they still think New orleans is gonna get the brunt of this ?

Yeah, not looking good. Looks like N.O. will catch the east side of the storm which is the worst. They can only hope it pulls to the west more now. I think whatever happens it's going to take a pounding - just a case of how badly now. Worst case scenario could see damage worse than Katrina.

Think they're still forecasting it to hit near enough head on.

The discussion states it will possible strengthen slowly as it crosses the gulf to the north west, and that a ridge will possibly deflect it slightly more to the WNW.

Discussion on potential development for Gustav

Not looking good for New Orleans :(

Lets hope it doesn't hit bad, but going by everything i've read & seen on tv/internet it is going to be a big one :(

I've got a 48 hour supply of popcorn.

I can't wait to see all the african american looters again, maybe they've adapted and bought boats, or am I giving them too much credit?

didnt you hear? the emergency services aren't gonna be there.

Sorry, but you must've been watching a different news conference than the rest of the World then. The Mayor quite clearly stated that the police and National Guard deployment is twice that for Katrina and also that any looters caught would be sent straight to Angola jail and thrown into gen-pop from the off.

I believe that there won't be any emergency services or National Guard there during the actual storm. That's why he said "you're on your own" to people who choose to stay. Of course they'll all be back once the storm has passed through - it's just silly to put them all in harms way when there should be nobody there to rescue because they should have left. Common sense.

Gustav is currently a Cat 3 ( 111 – 1 30 mph) with maximum 1 20 mph winds, moving at 1 7 mph. Gustav is predicted to intensify with 9 hours, as a Cat 4 (1 3 1 - 1 55 mph) a s it makes its way across the Gulf of Mexico. Gustav is predicted to make landfall within 21 hours, south of New Orleans as a Cat 4 , before downgrading to a Cat 2 within 33 hours.

Sounds fun :)

Looks bad for New Orleans then :(

On a different note, I thought Hurricanes were always named after girls?
Last time I checked, Gustav was a rather musculine name...

Male and Female names alternate I thought. They also go alphabetically. So the next will be female and begin with "H".

Edit. Yes (also confirmed by the picure above referring to Tropical Storm Hannah)

That sounds right, I knew it was alphabetical though. It doesn't have to be the next letter though does it? Just so long as it's alphabetical?
