I'm going to have another tinker with benching on the Bot. Unfortunately, I need to use Windows 7 so I need to use a separate SSD from main Win 10 OS.

I've got Win 10 on M.2 and Win 7 on SSD. I just tried to set Win 7 as the first boot device and it's corrupted the boot sector and I lost my Win 10 install.

Now that I'm starting fresh, I thought I'd attempt to get it right this time. :p

I can disable sata ports in BIOS, but for some reason I can't disable the M.2. This is giving me a bit of a headache as I risk corrupting the OS again if I boot into Win 7 on the SSD. I can't dual boot on the M.2 as Win 7 doesn't see it? Or is there a way to get Win 7 on the M.2 alongside Win 10?

Short of pulling the M.2 out every time I want to bench, what are my options?

Yeah I mean you need several OS not just 7 and 10 for benching efficiently. You should set up several SSD.

i would just take it out tbh.

I've managed a workaround. When I setup bios for normal use, the benching SSD is disabled. When I setup for benching, all (5) storage SSD's are disabled except the M.2.

It would've been a whole lot easier if Asus allowed for disabling the M.2 in BIOS, but they haven't so hey ho.

Yea I'll probably use this X99 rig exclusively for benching and then setup a partitioned 250GB SSD for multiple OS and have the M.2 removed into separate a gaming rig. Right now I'm not too bothered with high scores, I'm more interested in getting a better understanding of tertiary RAM timings and fine tuning the OC in general which is why I'm just working with Win7 initially.

Get a bunch of cheap ssds. Install each os on its own drive, strip os as you see fit, install benches specific to that os, make a clone / image. Swap ssd as needed depending on bench. Job done.

Ram timings specific to bench, there's no magic one setting does all but there are a few benches where tuning mem isn't critical.

I couldn't agree more. It took a long time for me to find places in the UK where I could talk about competitive oc with people.

Are you thinking of competing in the oc esports competitions or just general rankings on hwbot?

According to HWBOT I'm #53 in the UK... that makes me chuckle. :D

Team MLG is made up of a few folk from here, maybe @Nickolp1974 could advise if that's still going?

As for me, I'm interested in learning a bit more about it and improving my ranking from #53 I suppose. I don't think I'll ever get into proper competitive OC esports as I'm not set up for LN2 etc.

Soon to be top 50 then :D

Yeah I am in team mlg (actually I am a team captain) but it kind of died when there was a mass quitting. Nick was one of the people who quit but he is back now but for another team.

For the esports some are limited to or have ambient only competitions so you don't need to go cold and you can still win prizes if you compete in the ambient competition although they might not be as good as the sub zero prizes.

I will take a look at your profile and see what you could enter in :)

Nah the ocuk already exists and it's dead af. I was in it for 2 years or so and only my and vipernet subbed every now and then.

For me the team doesn't matter much the UK overclocking as a whole is the main thing that needs boosting :)

The whole overclocking scene in my view needs a refresh or support and not just from vendors, the industry as a whole. People forget that some of the products we use are developed with some of the worlds top overclockers such as 8pack, Elmor, der8auer, kingpin and quite a few more. If overclocking is abandened we probably won't see hardware like the Asus RIVE, Asrock mocf, evga kingpin vga's, gigabyte SOC force etc, these will disappear and we'll be left with bog standard stuff which won't OC, we all like something for free!!(as in a speed boost, FPS or MHz)

Lots of people OC their GPU & CPU on here, they just don't take it over to places like HWBOT. I think what puts people off the 'Bot is the restriction on Windows 10. It's a PITA trying to install Win7 and particularly XP onto modern hardware. I know we need to get into the older OS for a competitive edge, but I honestly think more people would post scores if they could use the one OS they have installed and that's usually Win10.

Overclockers are the minority tbh so hwbot only plays a very small part. People's attitudes have changed, there's almost no need for it in gaming as pointed out by many around here. Take kabylake for instance, a very small improvement over skylake. It may be, but it's such a good platform for OC where 7Ghz on the core and 4266mhz+ C12 is possible with the right silicone, that's just incredible. Even on ambient cooling on my sample bought from ocuk manages 5.5ghz+ 4133mhz C12 on water!!
Personally I'd like to see more exposure in the UK, like say at LAN events where attendance is very good. Maybe the biggest etailer which we are all part of would be interested in something like this, OCUK??????

It wouldn't be feasible for OCUK to run a stand alone competition given the set up and logistics, but maybe they could do a deal with HWBOT to sponsor a competition and make it accessible to the enthusiast as opposed to the extreme overclocker? A GPU as a prize or something? I'm not sure if it's feasible financially or logistically.

Anyway, I work offshore so my input is a bit feast and famine. Ideally I want to get a mATX build sorted for me and my boy to game with and I can then use my custom loop RVE-X99 system for benching exclusively. I keep meaning to get my garage sorted with a corner for benching gear, and even get a go with the bucket of ice method I discussed with you previously @Nickolp1974 :p

It's really enjoyable. I have a HD 6950 with custom block that I got on the MM really cheap. I got a couple of silver cups in some benches and it was a great wee buzz when I finally beat the top guy's score.

EDIT: Actually, I had gold cups with my GTX555 and some dude has come in and took my world record! Now I'll definitely need to get my benching rig sorted. :p

No not a competition, just some OC demo sort of thing, just a presence to get people interested. Or a OC workshop type of thing like Asus do, only has to be small at a large event.

Matx, get an Impact and 7700k, use for gaming and inbetween a bit of benching! :D

And yes, the ice bucket method for cooling is great for extracting more hz without breaking the bank, £20 pond pump, a bucket and ice! Lot of benching fun on the cheap!

I forgot about the Impact, I know it's ITX but that would be fine as I've got a Parvum Veer 1.0 ITX as well as a Parvum S2.0 mATX both going spare right now.

Plans are cooking again...
