Wife's pc psu died so i got a HX850 psu to replace it. However it would reboot after shuting down. Tested with a cheap £30 600w psu and it works. OCUK tested it in 2 systems and said it ok. So i now have a very expensive doorstop. Rant over.

if a 300 watt psu kept it happy, I would say that you paid for a very expensive psu to power a doorstop.

Almost all spec posts on this forum say never ever skimp on your PSU. This was a OCUK build from around Jan 08. In it was a OCZ 1010W. So going for a modern HX850 seemed about right to me.

What's your wife's PC spec? Unless its spec is similar to yours I would be puzzled to know why you bought such a high powered PSU, unless it was on offer at the time or you intended to put it in your PC at a later date?

People say never skimp on PSU meaning quality (buying a decent brand such as Corsair vs unbranded stuff), not to get quadruple the wattage you actually need

The old PSU was a OCZ 1010W so i didn't quadruple the wattage. The Corsair wont work on the system but a cheap unbranded 600w works.

Her system is a [email protected] on a ip35 pro mobo,8800gtx with 4gb of Ballistix Tracer ram
