Hey Guys,

I currently am looking at doing a little more of road cycling around Dartmoor but would also like to have the ability to hop off road, riding anywhere around the rocks etc. Obviously my Giant, isnt designed for this the tiny rims would die instantly.

So I am looking at getting a second more offroad able bike, does anyone have any suggestions for a good type of allrounder performer? Preferably a more of a upright that a low handlebar setup as I like to see what im rolling over on this hills :).

Thanks a lot.

Aye, XC > Hybrid looking at your budget and needs, most brands have entry level XC bikes at the £800 mark.

Wish I had a spare £800 for a new XC :( *sniff*.

You can get a very nice XC within that price-range at the moment due to the 2011 stock going on sale.

A cyclocross bike might be what you're looking for. It's like a beefed up racing bike designed to go off road as well as on road, with a bit more clearance for chunkier tyres. It uses the bigger diameter wheel size off a road bike and drop handlebars.

I did look at them Jonny, however I would like a bike with no drop handle bars really as I find that position better going off road.

Have a look at the Boardman hybrids which are decent spec for the price. I didn't think I would like them but I took the Hybrid Team for a ride the other day and I was very impressed after trying out a lot of different bikes recently. They come with 700x28 tyres but you can swap them for chunkier tyres for bumpier stuff (not too bumpy mind!). Trek hybrids are quite well regarded too. You'll find that the more expensive hybrids have road gearing but generally they have a mix of components. Do try the bikes before deciding though as there is a fair range of geometries with hybrids and you want to feel comfortable on it after spending that amount of money.

I'm starting to look at the Boardman bikes, but not sure whats what at present. Looking for a bike that can both onroad and a bit of off road through woods, gravel tracks and so forth.

Looking at team and comp range at the mo. Haven't looked at other brands yet.
