So heres a quick overview of the HXC II with photos and my thoughts on some of the changes. I won't gfo the whole hog on reviewing the sound as the headphones themselves haven't changed since Ryanr reviewed the HXC back in September

As I Said I don't need to go into much detail about the performance of the headphones themselves as they are as good as they were in the cloud one. The music sounds good and they are a light wearable headphone that provides reasonable performance in all areas for watching films and gaming.

The microphone is better by all standards it's perfect for its intended use of skype or gaming even answering calls on my mobile were loud and clear.

The Cable length is an interesting one and probably one of the only issues for me. It's a nice length it is the perfect length to plug into my DAC on my desk or into an XBOX One controller even for my phone it is long enough to allow my phone to be in my pocket. However there is no 4-pole extension and adapter to plug the HCX II into a normal sound card. I just feel like Kingston missed a trick hear. Sure the USB DAC is better than on board but some console gamers have PC's and nice sound cards and won't want to swap a 192/24 Premium sound card for a 48/16 USB DAC.

This brings me onto the USB DAC/Controller It's perfect for what its intended for and in my opinion it's a cleaner sound than on board. Plug and play in-line controls good sound considering it's only £10 more for the HXC II. The virtual surround works even if I personally don't use virtual surround, I could hear that it moved some of the sounds around accurately it did add a bit of bass to the sound which I'm not so keen on.

As you can see from the photos the experience and opening of the box itself sets the bar pretty high. Gives you a good feeling about the product just based on the effort put into presenting it all to you upon opening. It gives it a real premium impression which is what you want when you've just parted with £75 of your hard earned cash for a headset. Fortunately the product backs up the presentation nicely and you get a decent headset that is hard to be rivalled on price.

I've been using them for music at work for about a week now I can honestly say that for the money you'll struggle to go back to other similar priced products after using it. My colleague commented on how nasty it made his Siberia V2's sound after briefly using these.

So Pros
Same sound as the HXC they didn't change anything about that.
Improved microphone
Colours
Great value for money.
Compatibility It works with everything PC/Laptop/iPhone/Android/XBOX one/PS4

Cons
Lack of 4pole Jack extension/adapter for people who may want to use it with a sound card.

Does that little adaptor that looks like an airline adaptor split the audio and mic signals?

If you were plugging it into a soundboard youd need some kind of adaptor anyway, I didn't think that sound cards supported a 4 pole jack, normally they have seperate mic and audio jacks.

That's what he just said, there is no 4 pole adaptor included which is needed to use them with a sound card.

it would need to be both unless you happen to have the back of your computer near your face.

I see why they have done what they've done but I do think that little additional cable would have just been the icing on the cake for what is essentially a great product.

and yes as far as I can tell it's the airport adapter to split L and R

I like the older colour scheme better but these still look the business. I still listen to my HXC's often. Excellent for the price. Can't listen to them with the velours anymore though! Too sharp. The pleasure pads sound awesome, very beyerish but warmer and smoother.

I've bought a startech 4 pole extension and splitter which will then plug into two 1/4 to 3.5 adapters on my stx II. Messy I know! Hopefully all that won't deteriorate the signal much. Cost me an extra £9 but if it means I can use my stx and chat at the same time I'll be happy.

Overall pretty damn happy with these headphones for gaming. Just wanted a cheaper pair I could leave out on my desk for ease of use. HD650s for the quality listening time.

other way for me I can't handle the leather pads they get too hot :o

I've always found 3.5mm headphones give interference / static sounds when plugged into PC jacks. Sometimes even getting like electrical inteference / coil whine noises coming through cans plugged in via 3.5mm. USB has always had a crystal clear sound for me, never getting any weird noises when no sound was playing. As such I've stuck with USB headsets for the last few years.

I know these are 3.5mm, but as they go through the USB soundcard do you get any of the issues I described above? Really tempted by these and the only thing stopping me is the 3.5mm.

the noises you describe are because the audio is converted inside the PC and the circuitry picks up interference from the graphics card(s).

Even though the clouds have 3.5mm jacks the sound is converted outside the PC, so noise shouldn't be an issue unless it is being transmitted on the USB power lines, which can happen.

Super tempted by these, I just grabbed some Logitech 930s the other day and to be honest I don't think I like this virtual 7.1 crap. I think a good pair of stereo is probably better for gaming? I know these have virtual surround but it's not driver based and is done all on the card optionally right?

Virtual surround through a GOOD pair of stereo headphones / headset (Clouds included) can be very convincing depending on the game. I use a Xonar STX and a pair of AKG K702 for gaming and I used virtual 7.1 (Dolby Headphone) for Skyrim and the effect was breathtaking. Other games you are better off switching it off and using stereo because the game does the processing itself (any game with headphone as a selection).

I think the software on 930's is the problem, it has a switch for stereo but it barely works and the drivers are just a mess in general, sound levels going up and down when alt tabbing etc. So I'm basically using 7.1 for everything but in a lot of games like Diablo for example it just sounds bad.

Got a pair in gun metal, amazing quality! Plug and play no fuss and crips clear sound via the USB card.

If I'm being overly critical the outer edge of the metal is unfinished and a bit rough. Also I do miss the convenience of wireless.

Best headset I've ever owned hands down.

Good to hear I think the rough finish is part of the style for brushed finish but I know what you mean.
