Bit of a vague question, but is the difference in performance between HT and non-HT P4s very noticeable?

I'm looking to upgrade a few bits, inc the CPU, and while I'm getting along fine on my standard P4 2.6, I'm tempted to splash out on the 3.0HT. Or should I go for a 3700+ instead, I've been tempted by that too... I'm not much of a hardcore gamer, but I would like to be able to keep up and mess around on FEAR and things with them performing well, and I do mainly uni work, internet, but some music and graphics stuff too... Or should I just save my money instead!

windows are designed to work with HT tech, so generally an HT cpu will run faster within windows and can do more multitasking at once. The 3700 works fine for what you want, it has slight better "responce" within windows (when opening windows etc, because of the IMC) but it will "stuck" if you run many progs together in comparison with an HT cpu.

if FEAR runs ok with ** 2.6, save ya money! :D

I've just got a duel core intel 2.66 o/c to 3.4 and it flies. I did have a pent 4, 3gig o/c to 3.75, whilst superpi was sub 33 seconds, the duel core seems much more responsive in windows. Multi tasking is a pleasure now, no slow down.
I also have a 3700+ amd, and love it to bits, best gaming chip I've had, but can't manage to do what the intels does.

When I got the duel, I want to use my ddr ram and agp graphic card, so I bought the Asus p5p800 se. Hope this helps you decide, I know how hard it is to pick.

I just moved from an HT P4 at 3ghz to an Opteron 146 at 2.8.

Whilst the Opty blows away the P4 benchmark scores, there are more instances of "pauses" when I am doing multiple things. Burn a disk, play some tunes and then try opening up a couple of prog's and it will stick for a second - this never happened with the HT setup.

Am I bummed about it ? A bit, but the point of upgrading was to go PCI-E and the benefits of that - being able to play FEAR etc , more than outweigh the odd pause with multi-tasking.

I can of course , upgrade to an X2 later if it gets too slow ;)

i have both a
2.4 B 133fsb non Ht chip
2.4 C 200fsb HT chip

I have oced both in my shuttle the first to 3.5 and the second to 3.3 (still testing second tho)
and even with the 200mhz less the Ht chip is much faster and more responcive than the non Ht chip.

My 2.8ghz dothan or 3ghz Clawhammer (1mb) doesnt feel as fast in windows multitasking either, there are pauses. even tho both are much faster than it. ( the tale of pi)

get the HT chip you will notice the difference.
